Donald Trump has urged Cuba to "make a deal" or face consequences, warning that the flow of Venezuelan oil and money would now stop.

The US president has been turning his attention to Cuba since US forces seized Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro in a 3 January raid on its capital, Caracas.

Venezuela, a long-standing ally of Cuba, is believed to send around 35,000 barrels of oil a day to the island.

Cuba's foreign minister responded by saying his nation retained the right to import fuel "without interference", while its president said: "No one dictates what we do."

Cuba doesn't even have anything the US wants. The fact the US government is obsessed with it is just because some old fucks in the government are upset their mobster grandpa's casino investments were undermined

Cunty McCuntface acting like he owns the world.

Because the US military has failed their oaths.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 63 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah everyone knows Donald Trump can be trusted to honour a deal.

A Trump never pays their debts.

Great.

International policy played like a game of Civ where you are bored and about to quit, so you attack everyone, just to see what happens.

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is actually a super great, yet incredibly terrifying analogy.

I've been thinking in these terms for the past decade and it helps come to terms with so much.

Russia attacking Ukraine: I used to own this area like 40 turns ago, about time I took it back.

China: Oh shit, I forgot I had all my city preferences to growth. I need to change those to science and industry.

US on Israel: Geeze, my city-state (Israel) is really being aggressive for no reason and pulling me into all sorts of conflicts. Buuuut, I really don't want to lose that Religion bonus they give, so I'm going to just keep supporting them.

US on Venezuela: I need more oil, but don't want to trade people for it, let's look at where the closest tiles with oil resources are that I don't control yet. Wtf, Venezuela has 5 oil tiles?! Oh I'm definitely going to grab those. It might not look good diplomatically, but they'll get over it.

EU: Uh oh, I think the rest of the world is starting to notice that we've been focusing entirely on science and social research for the past 30 turns and that most of the big players are way ahead of us on Military research.

Africa as a whole is just that civ that got screwed over by a bunch of different civs early on and the AI has just stopped trying to advance or compete in any meaningful way.

Canada had a really solid, long-term alliance with the US and never had to worry about anything, but suddenly the US goals changed and they've been making ominous threats and comments about the comparative strength of their two militaries.

So the last time Cuba got nervous about the intentions of the US we ended up with the Cuban missile crisis. What's different this time?

[–] Godort@lemmy.ca 35 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You guys don't have JFK to try and resolve things diplomatically?

Now we have RFK, who will try to resolve things with unpasteurized dairy, ivermectin, and vaccine skepticism.

Trump and Puty are buddies and are working on carving up the world for a new world dystopia, which will be a humanity crushing mix of Chinese 1 party rule, American Corpotocracy, and Russian Gangster Oligarchy.

[–] IHeartBadCode@fedia.io 12 points 3 days ago (3 children)

The Soviet Union isn't actively moving a part of it's nuclear arsenal to the island.

The entire aspect of the crisis was weapons that could actually reach mainland US.

At the moment, no one who borders the Gulf of Mexico has weaponry that could reach say Miami or say Texas City a more strategic point.

So there's a sense of security by distance in the United States. Now the thing is, this whole thing changes the second any one of these nations procure a medium range weapon. That was the missile crisis. The US found out the USSR was trying to send long range missiles that could strike deep inside US territory.

The same would be true here. The second any of these nations obtain a missile that can hit the US the whole calculus changes.

Can you imagine? "Oh yeah, we invaded Venezuela but they have the ability to start blowing up condos from their own nation." People would be a whole lot more upset than they are currently.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

Important to note that the USSR did this as a response to the US stationing nukes in UK, Italy and especially Turkey, from where they could strike Moscow.

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Unless US starts a conflict with either Mexico or Canada, and then they will have unrest and attacks from those fronts. Even if they take major cities the vast amount of space will lead to endless war.

[–] somethingsnappy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Not saying the US doesn't have countermeasures, but Russia doesn't have subs capable of missile strike?

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Not much. :/

More distractions from the Epstein files. He is so terrified that people will find out he raped children.

[–] paperazzi@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

If throwing his newborn baby by a 13 year old overboard is any indicator, I'm sure those files will reveal much darker entertainment tbat he engaged in.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

And thats in the 1% released that was not censored by the DOJ.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He is so terrified that people will find out he raped children.

As if that would make any difference to MAGA. Epstein is not the scandal that will end Trump.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Epstein might end trump (often it is the weird hateful obsessions that end people, see: Charlie Kirk) the problem is it doesn't really affect his support base. I don't think there's a scandal that can affect trump's support base because they are very selective about the facts they want to believe.

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Those files don’t matter anymore. This is Miller telling Trump what he should do to be remembered as some powerful president.

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 5 points 2 days ago

I'm pretty sure he's just completely moved on from epstein. He's ramping up even more ICE, he's invaded a foreign country, is threatening many others, and is seemingly continuing on course. It's to late for the epstein files to matter at this point, not to mention the more pressing concern that is him giving blanket permission to ICE to start murdering anybody in their way.

Trump said: "Most of those Cubans are DEAD from last week's USA attack, and Venezuela doesn't need protection anymore from the thugs and extortionists who held them hostage for so many years.

"Venezuela now has the United States of America, the most powerful military in the World (by far!), to protect them, and protect them we will."

As long as they bend the knee and always pay their protection money

[–] EpicFailGuy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Actual cuban here weighting in.

I will not shed a single tear if Canel and all his people get kidnapped and tortured ... the Cuban people have suffered for 60 years because if the communist party stubbornness, but you know WHY the communist government is bad? because it's a dictatorship ... and you know who uses war powers without oversight or legal consequences? That's right ... dictators.

Governments need REGULATION so that this shit doesn't happen, what went wrong with cuba is the same thing that's going wrong with America RN.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 10 points 3 days ago

What if all these countries that the orange felon is threatening to attack pre-empted him?

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

Because he wants what his administration has always wanted: compliance in advance

[–] EtAl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago
