Yes I know this is a false dicotomy, but this is "a pick your poison" type of thing. Which do you think is the lesser evil?

Fully anonymous. No contest.

ID Verification is only about controlling what is published. Here the promise is that it will suppress bots, but that wouldn't be the only use. Setting up your own little space with ID requirement is absolutely an option. That that's not the default, tells us that overwhelmingly people do not want that.

Anyone who thinks that people using their real name will behave any better can go to Facebook for a reality check.

Let's do 0 anonymity plus bots filling everything! Fun!

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Bots for sure.

This really comes down to a choice between misinformation and an endless barrage of propaganda, or censorship. As horrible as I believe censorship to be, I think the former is actually worse since we are headed down a road of AI being able to drown everyone else out.

So I'm choosing the latter. It is an improvement over the road that we are likely to head down: censorship AND bot-generated misinformation and propaganda.

with anonymous internet there is at least a chance of having something decent. With id enforcement its like having someone looming over you ALL THE TIME. At that point might as well just not have internet at all.

[–] GoblinGreg@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

The former, no question.

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 1 points 3 days ago

Without anonymity, there's no point even having the internet. All the good things that came out of the internet came from the ability to communicate anonymously.

Option 3: Turns off internet and goes outside to touch grass.

How much filled with bots are we talking?

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Say like 90% - 99% depending on the day and on the mood of few humans left... depending on if they feel like going online or not.

[–] Addv4@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Are these nice bots? Or just pure spam.

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

They mimic humans but you know 90% or more are in fact bots

Haven't we already got the latter part of the first option?

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

That's what happens if you don't choose the lesser evil, you get both evils.

[–] CombatWombatEsq@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I’ll take one of each, please, and the anonymous one is the one we ban kids from but they go on any way when their parents aren’t looking.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works -3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh fuck no, you want to trap kids who are in a bubble of abuse and religion even more? The anonymous internet is basically the only way they have to get out of that, and you want to take it away from them?

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

I think it's sarcasm lol

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 days ago

Modern day Koan

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org -3 points 4 days ago

Real ID (with no need for these ugly verification services). Because we all need to get real again.

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works -2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Real ID please. In all other channels every one knows who you are, why not on social media?

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago

In all other channels?
