Anyone old enough to call it an avatar?

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 10 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Yes.

Also I don't know what the f in pfp is. If it's supposed to be profile picture, then the acronym should clearly be pp.

[–] texture@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

it gets awkward fast wen you say to someone you just met online "hey, i love your pp" or "hey, i noticed you have a cool pp"

That would be the initialism, yes, but pfp isn't an initialism.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Pfp makes no sense though. Why does profile get two letters if it's the same length as picture? Just say an actual word or call it pp.

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 4 points 4 days ago

Abbreviations don't strictly have to follow any specific logic, they just need to be understood. What you're describing is an initialism, where you just take the first letters.

My best guess for pfp is that it's an initialism of the first three syllables because the fourth is unintuitive, three letters was common enough back in the day of BBS and pfp was recognisable enough, while pp is fairly ambiguous. Someone started abbreviating it like this, people picked up on it, and by the time I was old enough to engage with English message boards it was the norm already.

ProFile Pic

PFP

It's just the first letters *of the syllables of the shortened saying.

[–] texture@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

i found the answer

[–] stiffyGlitch@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Then what is it??? Wouldn't it be an acronym????

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 1 points 4 days ago

That, or just a general abbreviation. If doesn't have to be a specific form of abbreviation.

Radar (Radio Detection And Ranging) also isn't a strict initialism, or it would be called RDAR.

Phrases like etc. (et cetera), & co. (company), vs. (versus), are also generally abbreviations.

No but I'm old enough to have custom made my own forum signature banners.

[–] Sebbie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 24 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'd respect it if she wasnt the literal worst girl.

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

I only watched S1 and the very start of S2, but I would say there is clearly a much worse one. If he just picked her the series would have been over immediately, another big plus.

Once cringe, always cringe.

I have a particular term for certain kinds of edginess I just call “Shadow the Hedgehog writing”, where it’s more likely to come from a teenager trying to seem grown up/cool than an actual adult.

Plenty of anime/VNs have fallen in this category, giving early content warnings that the content will be dark; and then just having non sequitor turnouts like “And then the heroine stepped in a trap that severed her spine. She screamed for hours, praying for help, but none came.”

There’s a particular game whose name rhymes with “Tomato” that did this for me once. You bring some children to safety, and then go fight the attackers sending tanks after them. I came back to the kids, joking to myself “Sorry, hero, it’s too late; we already drowned in our own fear and sadness…!” And then I laughed out loud when my joke turned out right.

Worst part is, there is some grim and depressing stuff in the world, and yet so many grimdark writers don’t see any nuance in it.

What game is that? I'm trying to search for games whose name rhymes with tomato, but it all returns a game called "Mr. Tomato"

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I’ve never been weeb enough to use an anime girl for my avatar.

[–] Electricd@lemmybefree.net 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Good, keep it that way, I’ll come back

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

At this point in my life I’d have to receive a head injury or something to become more weeb.

[–] Electricd@lemmybefree.net 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

That's what they all say

next thing you know they're in maid outfits, with body pillows and giant and explicit anime girl figurines

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Nah, I’m just 39 and have a wife. And also can count the anime’s I’ve watched on one hand. So it would take an unforeseen tragedy at this point.

[–] Electricd@lemmybefree.net 2 points 3 days ago

Alright yea you’re pretty safe

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 5 days ago (4 children)

People have inferiority complex when they're young so they feel they need to brag with how "badass" they are.

When you're older you understand that true wisdom is in the little things, in the things that don't look like much but make up a healthy society.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

If you use some masculine image for your pfp on a forum, there's a good chance you'll blame women something or spout some other anti-woke shit eventually.

Another day of weebs trying to vindicate themselves within the gamer community smh my face

[–] diemartin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The first pfp I used was a cropped FF Advent Children walkpaper of Cloud with sunglasses.

I still use Panty from Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt in some places. In other places I have an anime style OC character from a game I was developing (for which I lost the code to a hard drive crash). Some places have my photo (which I regret).

Now I use a photo of my cats.

I don't think I have a pfp on Lemmy

[–] konalt@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You do! It's your cats. Love them!

I've used the same pfp which is a photo of myself with a funny mask since 2007.

[–] KernelTale@programming.dev 3 points 6 days ago

I wanted a pfp of what I wanted to be and now it is what I am. I wanted to be read as cool but now I have Many from Honzuki no Gekokuji, because I love literature and I see myself as a small girlie.
