Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

This all stops if enough of us say no. Sell your stocks. Let's reset the power they think they have.

[–] peaceful_world_view@lemmy.world 13 points 13 hours ago

Hitler thought the same.

seeing Miller saying "damn straight we can" makes me want to punch him in the face.

The UK and France should train their nukes on the US. Sure, they only have around 500 combined, but that's more than enough to destroy pretty much everything of note.

Like seriously, no one wants to threaten nuclear war but Europe has to use every threat it has against Trump.

> americans think they have power
> americans start a war
> americans lose the war against a bunch of dudes in sandy flip flops

Let's see history repeat itself. Again.

Before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia was feared as a great military might of the world.

Now the curtain has been drawn back on the wizard, and it turns out they can't even properly subjugate their neighbors.

Makes me wonder how much of the military bravado from China and America is just a fancy veneer and how deep the corruption has managed to hollow out their ability to fight a real slugfest of a war, not these one-sided invasions and subsequent 20 year occupation.

At the end of the day.. in a 1v1, I like to think USA would legitimately eradicate any country it fought. The problem here is, the way we are treating the rest of the world.. when a fight eventually does fully break out, it won’t be 1v1.. and in that scenario, shit can get wild. I’d like to think USA would stand its ground pretty well, might even fuck up a country or 2. But to think we could do it without incurring any sort of loss of our own is just plain silly. I think at a certain point the rest of the world is going to get sick of our shit, and that point might be a lot closer than any of us would like to admit. I’m not sure what’s gonna happen, but it ain’t gonna be fuckin pretty that’s for sure.

Not being a military or strategy educated individual, what I can say is that the US armed forces are not prepared nor geared to long term war of attrition.

The entire doctrine relies on threat of overwhelming force and brutal initial strikes, which actually work, but wars are won in the long run and the US armed forces are not capable of such effort.

The logistics is too complex, too much infrastructure is required to maintain forces supplied and motivated, and the stock from which the common soldier is being pulled is used to or expects a certain degree of comfort.

That is why guerrilla warfare and the forces relying on it are so successful: they are already prepared to live and endure a bad time. They are already predisposed to die. And they usually fight for causes, not barons.

[–] stylusmobilus@aussie.zone 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

That’s basically what’s meant by ‘in the end, they don’t win’, yeah.

I don’t want to see this happen ay. The US has put out more good than bad. We don’t just lose the mad, bad shit, we’ll lose all the good stuff as well like tech advancements, entertainment, pop culture…it’ll all go and that might be the biggest tragedy of the lot.

[–] BigShammy80@feddit.org 4 points 13 hours ago

The wealthy will find a new country to settle and develop their tech stuff... the country where they pay the least amount of taxes of course.

[–] alfredon996@feddit.it 3 points 17 hours ago

The difference is that Russia didn't have dozens of military bases in Ukraine, nor was its digital infrastructure provided by Russian companies, nor did its military rely extensively on Russian materials. Meanwhile, this is the case with Europe and the USA, and the sad reality is that Americans have so much leverage that they can do everything they want with Europe.

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Why not start a quick 10-year war to find out?

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Just a really fast military quagmire... as a treat! ☺️

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I know fuck all about geopolitics but surely China and Russia at this point should just start doing crazy stuff to America.

Like Xi could kidnap Vance and put him on trial for something.

If the EU lets America take Greenland then there is no illusion of security anymore and America is how I’ve always seen them, bullies. At least now they own it with pride and I kinda respect that a little.

I hate violence but if Europe wants me to join a fight against the USA. I’ll sign up tomorrow.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

russia sure has quited down thier troll farms recently, because US is currently doing what putins wanted right now. CHina is less clear.

[–] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 1 points 11 hours ago

I suspect that are more affective of pushing the russian goals and are able to hide better. AI is probably helping.

[–] stylusmobilus@aussie.zone 2 points 13 hours ago

Yeah they’re still going in the crucial areas, such as the tankie subs.

The short racist fuck would create a massive cluster fuck.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 25 points 1 day ago

And how do you have that power? Because the rest of the world gives you money.

How about we stop?

[–] wildcardology@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (6 children)

I've always wanted to know if the US can survive if the rest of the world bands together and attack the US from all sides.

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We don’t need to do that. We should all divest from America. Stop using American companies, stop buying their products etc.

I already do this but I’m talking about governments we should treat America how it treated Cuba for so long

No. But the rest of the world wouldn't survive either.

Stephen Miller is 100% a fascist

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's the best thing you could say about him, and he'd probably feel complimented.

He probably giggles when someone calls him a Nazi.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Please bomb my country, anyone. And don’t stop until Washington is a smoldering crater.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 14 hours ago

make sure they are all gathered in mar-a-lago, like the oligarchs, and trumps admin was celebrating in one place.

American Democrats believe that Power allows them so sleep soundly, knowing that our nation can defend itself.

MAGAs believe that Power is useless unless it is being wielded at all times.

The problem is that Dems have become so complacent with their responsibility over Power, that they will do anything to keep from actually wielding it, even to protect America from an active, ongoing national security threat...

...While MAGA is enthusiastically using that Power to beat the rest of us, and the world, into submission.

I have a crazy suggestion: maybe Europeans countries should stop buying US weapons?

[–] BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not kidding we (Denmark) just ordered more f35s and are in the process of buying a couple of US electronic surveillance aircraft and patriot systems... Our intelligence services use Palantir for all our personal info btw

Our politicians are still thinking that we can appease the US by funding the US military industrial complex.

You'd think they'd know how surprising nations can unite when risks are in the air. Notable examples:

  • Nazi Germany allied with Soviet Union 1939-1941
  • Allied forces allied with Soviet Union 1941-1945

If USA annexes Greenland, EU allying with China stops being an absurd idea.
