I could run a low 40s 10K about 10 years ago. I can't anymore. I have trouble even imagining doing it at 80...
Running
A place for runners.
What makes the performance stand out even more is its consistency. Ozanne isn’t peaking for novelty or chasing one viral result. Over the past year, he’s quietly stacked record-level performances across distances that most runners begin scaling back from decades earlier.
I'd say that makes it less remarkable.
He wasn't an 80 something year old who trained for this, he's a lifelong runner who just turned 80 and started breaking records automatically with the same times he's been doing.
The 6 minute mile was like 70 years ago, and was quickly followed by huge improvements in training and equipment. Stacking on top of that how small injuries are recovered from better now, and long term risks are mitigated...
We're going to keep seeing these elderly records broken, it's not a bad thing, but we should get used to it.
But it's not surprising to see a huge jump from the generation of kids who witnessed the six minute mile and threw themselves behind it.
Like, that shit was practically on the same level as going to the moon, it inspired a shit ton of people.
Quick edit:
Don't get me wrong, super impressive, congrats to this dude. I won't be able to do it at 80.
Just saying the article is trying to make it seem like a one off super story for the clicks, when really it's just a natural result of people getting really into running 70 years ago, and continuing with all the new advances.
