I can believe it because paid vacation is mandatory in Canada :)
No Christmas bonus here but my company did give everyone almost two weeks paid vacation covering all of Christmas and through the new year.
I've never heard of anyone getting one, ever. But I work at a university.

one place I used to work at gave a dollar for every hour the employee worked. (It was a seasonal job.) Another place I worked used to give every employee a $100 bill and an xmas card. My daughter works at a store that just gave her $150 in gift cards.
Don't know how widespread it is, but it does happen.
A dollar for every hour worked is like a raise if you work all year.
