True story, late 1970s a bunch of us were camping and buddy drops a hit of purple microdot...not feeling it after about an hour so he drops another...an hour later he vanishes. Nothing we can do as access to our camp is by water only, it's pitch black, and we're in the bush...bear, deer, moose, etc. Buddy stumbles out of the woods after daylight...he'd spent 10 hours hugging a tree, on 2 hits of cid. He never did acid again.

He got the full nature experience
I don’t know why but your story reminded me of this fun little book by Swiss author Martin Suter:
It happened again?
Edit: for context this was the story I was familiar with originally https://www.cbsnews.com/news/missing-woman-finds-herself-after-intense-search/

Whenever these stories come out I think I'd be that guy. But once you're given a description of yourself and your clothing?!
He's trashed, I want to know why the sober people didn't figure it out
I don't drink anymore, but when I did I definitely could have been that guy. Blackout drunk is wild.
I hope he said "That description sounds pretty framiliar, i feel like i know the guy"
Who else would be more qualified to know what he would do in a situation like this.
Imagine being head of the search team and you gotta explain this to your boss.
That part of search and rescue training must always be funny, but it's also true.
That's something my mother would 100% do and she doesn't vmeven drink
Did they give up the search?
We all does need some of them searching to find ourselves, so good on him.
