A St Petersburg court has sentenced a 19-year-old woman to nearly three years in a penal colony after she was accused of repeatedly “discrediting” the Russian army, including by gluing a quotation on a statue of a Ukrainian poet.

Darya Kozyreva was sentenced to two years and eight months, the Joint Press Service of Courts in St. Petersburg said in statement Friday.

Kozyreva was arrested on February 24, 2024, after she glued a verse by Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko onto his monument in St Petersburg, according to OVD-Info, an independent Russian human rights group.

3 years for a bit of vandalism on a statue from the "Nazi" country they're invading. Interested to see how the tankies defend this.

[–] antonim@lemmy.dbzer0.com 84 points 6 days ago (2 children)

They won't defend it, they'll just ignore it and keep talking about US being bad.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 27 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Well obviously, the US committed a genocide against it's native population and had interment camps in world war 2. Everyone knows since that happened it's been functionally impossible for any other nation to ever do a bad thing. The US created a monopoly in doing bad things and refuses to share with the world because they're shellfish

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 5 points 5 days ago

because they're shellfish

[–] biggeoff@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Both can be bad, both are worth talking about.

Sorry I missed that, too many polarising people around.

Have a good one

[–] 0x0@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago

had interment camps in world war 2.

ICE brought those back.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

Yeah, but… what type of shellfish?

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

lol! That’s exactly what happened in a comment responding to the same thing! Dude just whatabout’ed the entire thing and circled back around to how the US blah blah blah….

It’s fucking uncanny.

3 years might become 10, there's such thing as a "carousel prosecution" in Russia: your sentence ends, you are ready to leave and get another one for some nonsense; rinse and repeat.

I hope this girl is not that important tho.

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 13 points 6 days ago

That's if she survives the next 3 years

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 6 days ago

Clearly she’s a counter revolutionary.

Tankie here: nothing to defend, there is currently no tankie in the comments defending anything. As any capitalist country does regarding its geopolitical interests, Russia will enjail anti-war protestors and/or activists, and I condemn this. The same happens in Britain today, with activists from pro-Palestinian groups doing a literal hunger strike in jail with no coverage from mass western media.

Now, as a reply: why haven't I seen posts over in .world about the five Russian communists given 15ish years of jail each for being communists? Why is it western mass media doesn't care about communist activists but does only care about pro-Ukraine activists, and why is this reflected on a supposedly free Fediverse instance?

[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Regarding your reply, a wild story, but I'm not sure it was done because they are communists, rather because they need to jail someone to get a yearly bonus, and these guys looked like they could do

There are similar stories not reported in western media about Marxists in Russia being enjailed, such as this one of a Kazakh student being prosecuted for having a Marxist reading club in university.

This is persecution of communists, not just a bychance

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 61 points 6 days ago (2 children)

That's where Trump wants to take us. To this Soviet Russia shit.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 12 points 6 days ago

This is notably not soviet Russia.

[–] Socialism_Everyday@reddthat.com -1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Soviet Russia is when capitalist country does capitalist country thing

Pathetic putin being scared of little girls being more brave than he will ever be.

Not the first time he had girls arrested for standing up to him.

You know what my mid-life crisis is like? Not someone who thinks 'damn, half my life is done, I went from being a fit and thin individual pre-covid to being an overweight guy who still hasn't lost the covid weight or changed his life accordingly... also I want a sports car and date girls half my age (who would all be over 20)'

It is more like... I had no idea the world would suck like this in this way. The liberal 'end of history' myth that (neo)liberal democracy was the ultimate form of society and no more dictatorships went now to a world of hyperauthoritarianism, with all countries either being oligarchic democracies were the people are given the illusion of choice to dictatorships where even that is not granted. Where the world is run on the whims of out of touch psychopaths who don't have any understanding on how civilization and economies work other than 'do exactly what I say or you will die'. Donald Trump has effectively ended any pretense of such an order.

And even the whims of small time psychos ruin everything for everyone, like mass shooters who in some countries has resulted in continued efforts to eliminate entire sports and sectors of the economy (I am referring to Canada and polytechnique in 1989. Gun laws in Canada are being continually written mostly as a result of that one shooting that has now resulted in the effective obliteration of shooting as a sport). And no, while other shootings have happened they have not had the same effect. The worst mass shooting in canada history was done with smuggled firearms from the US and the shooter was barred from legally owning firearms for decades.)

Lucky that it rhymes in translation.

The verse from Shevchenko’s My Testament read, “Oh bury me, then rise ye up / And break your heavy chains / And water with the tyrants’ blood / The freedom you have gained,” OVD-Info said.

Just responded some minutes ago. Wanna retract your comment now?

This will be America in a year or so.

I wonder how the US will handle anti-war protestors

Will? Future? You can already check how they treat pro-Palestine protesters

I mean, they grilled Hasan Piker for hours: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/12/hasan-piker-border-trump-gaza

"Relatively peacefully" for now, but you can tell they're going to keep pushing things.
