Anyone have ideas as to what species this young palm tree is? It grew by itself and I'm considering transplanting it to a more open location, but ideally I'd know what it will turn out to look like long term before I do that. This is around Canberra which might help narrow it down (i.e. it has to be something fairly cold tolerant).

Maybe a Cabbage tree palm?

Seems a good guess looking at the leaves, hopefully it is one because they seem to look nice when fully grown.

Yeah they can grow really tall after many years. Grow everywhere around here (qld) if that is what it is.

@Tau

The online ID thing suggests it is either:
* Chinese Windmill Palm; or
* Trackycarpus

Looks like a cabbage tree palm (80% confidence I would say).

That does look like a pretty good match to the leaves, looking at photos cabbage tree palms look decent fully grown so that'd be nice.

If you step on some god awful spikes it's a cabbage tree.

My wife says Windmill Palm

That looks like a strong contender, I'd be alright with that too as they appear to still have a nice tall palm tree shape (I do think species that end up with clear trunks have a aesthetic edge but with the bottom trimmed all would be good).

We had one before moving. As you say its not like a true trunked palm, but the trimmed old foliage does build a faux trunk type look. Ours grew quite quickly...but we are west coast so mild winters
