This almost gets it. Complements should be about choices.

Instead of saying, "you're so pretty." Try, "that color really brings out your sparkle."

"You're hair looks so amazing today, did you try a new product?" Not "You have pretty hair."

By complimenting the decision you have given ownership of the praise to the decision maker and not whatever gods you think made us. My hair is pretty because i painfully take care of it. Not because I'm blessed. Complement a persons decisions rather than station.

[–] Kacarott@aussie.zone 1 points 8 hours ago

Yes, but I think it is more meaningful to compliment things which are the result of effort, or a long series of decisions. Compliment someone's muscles when they've been making the effort to work out for a couple months. Compliment someone's cooking ability if they spend a lot of time cooking and practicing that art. Compliment someone's hair if they clearly put effort into making it look good.

[–] DoctorPress@lemmy.zip 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

NANI NANI! GRAMMAR POLICE HERE! YOU JUST SPELLED "You're hair" WRONG (correct is "Your hair").

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 1 points 6 hours ago

I respect your integrity to stand by your convictions. We may disagree about those convictions, but it's good to see someone willing to speak up for there believes.

I love complimenting people, man or woman. However, as you said, I like to compliment something that took effort or at least commitment, not luck. It costs nothing and often nets happiness.

I've mentioned this on lemmy before, but one of my favorite memories is complimenting a random guy's jacket in the waiting area at an Outback Steakhouse. The jacket was loud, but pretty cool. I said I liked it; he grinned, thanked me and clapped me on my shoulder. The person I presume was his girlfriend or wife rolled her eyes, but smiled.

That's all the context I have, but I assume she had teased him for it and he had defended it. Whatever the actual circumstances were, everyone walked away smiling.

You know how to take charge and get what you want.

[–] obsoleteacct@lemmy.zip 7 points 21 hours ago

"You're way more committed than our last dom".

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

You smell great!

[–] CustardFist@feddit.nl 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“Nice grip on the gun you have there. Have you been taking shooting lessons?”

[–] CH3DD4R_G0BL1N@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I would have defaulted to complimenting her trigger discipline but…

[–] emax_gomax@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

Your dramatic, you should try improv.

[–] pixeltree@lemmy.blahaj.zone 50 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gotta admire how assertive she is

[–] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She's being aggressive though

Call it enthusiasm

[–] Klear@quokk.au 5 points 1 day ago

A little bit active-aggressive.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Men getting angry. "Last compliment I got was 15 years ago. You at least get compliments!"

[–] yggstyle@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Careful. Last time there was a comic about complimenting men it got deleted because uh... Ah yes. Too wholesome.

[–] certified_expert@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

"Give me a complement that isn't about my looks"

"Well, you gotta be pretty to receive those"

"Bang! bang! bang!"

...

the hostage walk away...

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

You’re super excellent at expressing your sense of being oppressed.

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Needs accessibility.

They're good at objectifying hostages into coercive instruments.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago

You are very good at taking control of a situation

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 39 points 1 day ago (3 children)

You have a very pretty.... pistol.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 58 points 1 day ago (4 children)

But like, it seems like she's a complete stranger to them, how are they supposed to compliment her on anything other than her looks? This comic is trying to make some sort of point but it's not making that point.

[–] YoFrodo@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"You seem to be very determined and willing to get out of your comfort zone while asking for what you want."

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 day ago

That might work. You should at least phrase it more positively: "You're very brave." Your version is more of a neutral observation IMHO.

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 18 points 1 day ago

You have some serious balls to come in here and make demands like that.

Not sure if that's actually better, but it's not about looks.

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You handle that gun like a professional. I like your red shirt. I like your brown pants. I like your white shoes. You seem like a very take charge person.

That was after putting 5 seconds of thought into it.

3/5 of those were about her looks. The other two, yeah, I thought of that option just before posting but figured I'd let someone else say it. Just hoped they'd be less condescending about it.

[–] Willy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (4 children)

is that about looks or taste?

She actually has terrible trigger discipline.

[–] verdi@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

It was drawn by someone who only gets compliments on their looks. It checks out.

You have a wonderful commitment to your goals.

[–] notreallyhere@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

you know how to take charge

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

"Wait, please! I swear your looks aren't even worth noting, truly! I would never compliment them!"

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

I like the way you handle that pistol, if you know what I mean.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

"You seem to seriously know what you want and to be willing to do whatever it takes to get it"

[–] BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

“You gals get compliments ?”

[–] infinitevalence@discuss.online 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You seem like the take no prisoner type of person we need at this company!

[–] just2look@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They are literally taking a prisoner though.

BANG

“Ok, now you’re hired”

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

objectification

The hostage

I see what you did there. Did you?
