Hi all,

I was wondering what people think about a piefed instance for SJW? I personally have issues with Lemmy devs and I think their reputation is a massive turnoff for many people looking for alternatives to corporate run social/forum services.

I understand that this instance is community run and resource considerations are probably an issue. No questions about that.

I was more thinking in purely theoretical terms.

I'd switch to a SJW piefed in a heartbeat if it were offered. I also believe piefed will prove itself as the more sustainable project and will eventually surpass lemmy.

It's more a question of when will SJW roll out piefed IMO.

I've been considering running it in parallel to a lemmy instance but it comes down to a few things:

  • What do we call it?
  • We would need more Admins to help with the moderation
  • Extra server resources (which we have enough of for now and I don't have problems getting more of!)

piefed.itjust.works - IYKYK as the young folks say (I am not that old, late 30s, or perhaps that's what I tell myself). :)

With the admin piece, maybe start a thread in Agora looking at interest from long time prominent users?

Just some thoughts...

What makes Piefed better over all? There is already massive fragmentation it seems to me. How would this move be better? If its simple answer of not liking the reputation of Lemmy devs why not find a new instance on Piefed? I'm asking this while agreeing with you, just trying to understand.

It's a much better and feature rich platform for both users and moderators. Piefed is definitely a lot more than a "Threadiverse client where the developers happen to not be tankies."

User facing features:

  • Multi community post comment aggregation
  • User reputation system
  • More granular and sophisticated user-controlled blocking and mute system

Mod/curator features

  • Scheduled posting (really helpful to avoid posting ~3 links within 15 min in a community)

The developers are also a lot more responsive and proactive. I've had several minor features implemented following requests.

I can't comment on the details of its algorithm, but you do get warning badgfor spamm/trash posters. Emphasis on spammy, less so unpopular opinion.

Maybe in time, when Lemmy code development gets too poorly managed.

I'd have to ask: how compatible are they? I mean internally, like their custom assets, database structures, and other runtime files.

We all know that Lemmy and Piefed instances can talk with no issue. The client applications seem to not be fully compatible with one another (CMIIW).
