Welcome to a Star Trek community where you’re free to chat and share your opinions about all things Trek!

I want to have a place where fans can come to praise, discuss, and even criticise things in the Star Trek franchise. No show or movie is perfect, and I don't believe people should be silenced for having a dissenting opinion. That being said, there are still a few rules.

Be Nice - No personal attacks. You can disagree with someone's opinion, but it needs to stop there.

No Slurs - This is applicable to ethnicity, religion, gender, or anything else.

No Adult Content - Keep it family friendly.

No Spamming or Trolling - Consistently spamming comments or trolling is just not needed.

Keep Topics Trek Related - This is a Star Trek community, so of course discussion should stay in that area! That means no real world politics.

Carrying on with my DS9 binge, into S6 now. Goddamn im glad I took the plunge. I saw a decent bit of it after TNG episodes growing up, but I had trouble keeping up with it - my parents didn't like it as much as TNG so they'd change the channel half the time.

But this show is excellent. Just like everyone told me.

Earlier this morning was the Ferengi rescue mission, I love those damn goblins. About to start Who Mourns for Morn, RIP i guess :( i loved how he was always having conversations off camera but never a word otherwise lol, he reminds me of a regular back in my bartending days.

Of course the last episode had the utterly cold "But I fear no evil" line from Sisko. Nearly every episode is a straight banger.

Edit: Yup, Who Mourns for Morn was as much fun as I suspected it would be.

I grew up on TOS reruns, and TNG as a teen

but had gone off to foreign lands without television by the time DS9 was in full swing.

TBH I didn't like it at all through the first season, and my millennial partner had told me that Quark was her favorite character and I just couldn't square that with what I knew about ferengi.

BUT I was so, so wrong. DS9 is fantastic and the problematic merchant goblins are great characters.

It's an amazing show! My favorite Trek show for sure. It sounds like you watched The Magnificent Ferengi, that episode was great. I try not to compare the shows too much, and attempt to take each on their own merits, but sometimes it's difficult not to compare them with DS9's consistency and character growth.

I've heard that from a lot of people and I can absolutely see why. Ngl Sisko was... awkward for the first season or two, which, sure, he was starting from a low place, but his delivery of lines seemed almost randomly inflected. Weird, crazy smiles or gestures that felt out of place. I've really come to love him though, I get why hes so many folks' favorite captain.

I've had kind of a rough stretch irl and my mental/emotional health hasn't been doing great, but this has been helping. I've even started picking up a little Klingon for fun, I've always meant to but never got around to it.

Now, though, im faced with a dilemma - when im done, do i a) finally watch TOS, b) binge Voyager (similar deal as DS9, watched a bit back when it was airing but never the full show), or c) re-watch Lower Decks now that ill get all the DS9 references?

It's a good dilemma.

Yeah, early Sisko seemed a bit more awkward until he figured out the character a little more. I've always liked most of the extra expressive things he did, but it definitely is a different acting choice than you see most making. He was also something unique in that he was a Star Trek character with a good family relationship! Plus, he was the only captain that could get rid of Q. 😉

I'm glad something is helping out! It's nice to be able to drop into something like that for a while sometimes.

That is a dilemma! I recently rewatched DS9 then Voyager, and for me it was a bit of a letdown after DS9. Some people prefer Voyager though, so you never know! I still like it, but the type of storytelling doesn't work as well for binging for me.

Been doing bedtime DS9 lately, having already gone through TOS and TNG.

Amazingly, for a kid who watched TOS reruns in the 70s, there were some episodes that I had never seen. Also, some real stinkers -- it was a slog at times

Anyhow, just now in DS9 S7 so soon it will be Voyager

I'm sure it's interesting finding those new episodes! Even though modern streaming certainly isn't perfect, it's very good for catching things like that!

[–] BallShapedMan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Catching up on the third season of Picard. Not sure which episode but pretty early in.

[–] stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I haven't watched any of it other than a few clips, but it seems people like that season!

[–] BallShapedMan@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The first half of the first season and this season are worth the rest it seems. Otherwise they shifted too far from what makes Star Trek what it is. Though the one with Pike is really good and gets it. A bit too modern at times but overall the best attempt of any of the new stuff in my opinion.

I've tried Lower Decks a few times and I just can't get into it. And the other one with the spore drive would have been fine in many other universes, but not this one.

[–] stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Of the new shows I really enjoy Strange New Worlds, and enjoyed a fair amount of the more serious sections of Lower Decks. A lot of the humor in LD felt like it was trying too hard, and I often didn't find it funny. I have a different sense of humor than some though, so that probably doesn't help!

I did try both Discovery and Picard, but neither of them worked for me. Maybe someday I'll feel like finishing them!

Sounds like we're in the same boat! Great to have company.

I'm hopeful for Star Trek Academy. The trailer looks good.

[–] stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm definitely going to give it a try, I try to keep my expectations in check so I'm not disappointed though!

[–] BallShapedMan@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Good call! That's why I don't watch trailers once I've decided to watch something. Hype ruins stuff for me.

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not watched, but my best friend asked me to join a trivia quiz about Trek and so far I'm winning. ^^

[–] stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Nice! I never do good at that type of thing! I can remember all sorts of random things any other time, but when I have to, my memory drops to the level of a goldfish!

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Alright then, let's start easy:

The name of Spock's pet?

Bonus question: What was the pet's fate?

[–] stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

If I'm remembering my TAS correctly, his sehlat was named Ichaia (not sure on the spelling!) and died protecting young Spock from a creature. I always thought it was interesting that the creature used a roar very similar to Godzilla's!

Some weird AI generated video channel that highlights Star Trek women in the shortest possible skirts allowed to be displayed on Youtube

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Can't fault your honesty lmao

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I was on a Youtube AI channel kick for a few days where I scrolled through endless streams of AI content. Most of ... or the majority of it was just sexy women in either skin tight clothes, thongs or overly sexualized bodies ... it was just a matter of time before I ended up with a Star Trek themed channel

Whatever floats your boat i reckon

This week I watched a few random episodes of DS9. I wanted to compare Space Seed (TOS) to the recent Khan audio drama, so I watched that too.

[–] Atomicbunnies@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I have seen everything Star Trek up to this point. I decided to follow this list. Just wrapped up Enterprise this week.

Star Trek viewing guide

DS9 will always be my fav tho.

[–] stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

Looks like a nice list to follow! I've thought about doing something like that before, but I always get distracted by something else.
