All you people who were hating on racists on Twitter, you were hating on foreigners!! πŸ™ƒ

[–] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 55 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Now MAGA comes out as DEI.

[–] MTZ@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Lmaoooooooooooooooo

[–] BlueMagma@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago

I hate all racists equally, regardless of their origin or appearance.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 47 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

This whole thing brought up an interesting question. At what point should social media no longer be considered viable for human beings looking to at least commensally communicate with one another*? I personally feel we’ve already reached that point.

[–] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 45 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When the social communication platform distorts the truth.

So, like 15 years ago.

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Twitter peaked around 2012 I think.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 7 points 2 days ago

They should ban big tech from running social media platforms. Would be a huge plus for humanity.

i've said before that we're faced with two options:

  • either introduce a system that can tell you what account is run by an actual human being and which account is not. that could be done in an anonymity-preserving way with codes that you have to get in person (like, from a local library) and then use as a cryptographic signature for online accounts. it's a bit techy, but doable.
  • or we accept that machines casually pass the Turing Test and we're probably talking to AIs online.

On point 1. Every time stuff like this comes up in policy discussions there is pushback maybe because the narrative is too vague I don't know. The gist is the requirement for named users online not aliases, or a way to tie those aliases easily to named users if required.

People don't like this. I would argue it's too late to get a consensus and stuff like Facebook tying your phone and name to an account is needed.

The nuance is how companies and governments use that information and in that we continue to fail hard. My name and my number is my data to decide how to share NOT for Facebook or anyone else.

Penny arcade provided decades ago the internet anonymity problem and it's growing alarmingly fast.

We all are or have been that person to yell shitcock! at times.

Edit - there's a larger issue at play too that our systems have not caught up with globalization. Facebook is multinational how does any one government hold them to account? I'd argue our governments around the world are stuck in 19th century governance styles while the world is rapidly moving to the 22nd century.

It's gonna get far worse before it gets better IMHO.

It's like I've said before. Climate change won't be an issue until a city like New York is buried by the ocean. Those in power need to feel the pain whereas right now all we are getting is lip service or the bare minimum at best.

Thats the 33% theyre always talking about! /s

But seriously, fuck these foreign agents. Such a good sign that your policy is so well received that you need to astroturf patriotism.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de -2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

TBF accounts coming from "Nigeria" and "Bangladesh" are probably not actually foreigners sitting there and writing english messages on social media one-by-one. It's either bots behind VPNs, or people behind VPNs. And they could absolutely be within the US.

[–] baatliwala@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Twitter flags if you're behind a VPN with an exclamation and lets everybody know. I mean yeah it might be possible for some VPNs to stealth around that but not all of them can do it successfully. Common VPN IP ranges are well known and can relatively easily be filtered.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I can’t tell if this is sarcastic or this was posted as true.

[–] Alaknar@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's sarcasm. Twitter introduced a feature that allows you to check the country from which an account was registered. Hundreds of pro-MAGA accounts turned out to be from the countries listed in the OP.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Ok I had heard something about that and figured this was about that but given the time of year my brain was fried. Thanks for the clarification.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I used to be afraid of death.

These days, I feel like, I'd rather avoid it, but I'd be kind of fine it happening.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I have come to the realization that dying in my sleep of old age would be a waste. I believe that my life may have an unexpected twist ending, and I'm good with that.

I have certain Red Lines that will not be crossed. The most important are certain people whom I love, who belong to demographic groups that are particularly despised by MAGA. If anything were to happen to them, I would have nothing left to lose, and I would become a very dangerous individual.

I believe I am not alone in this feeling.

[–] myrrh@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 day ago

...i am maintaining civility until there's none left to maintain, but when a good man goes to war, demons run...

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have nothing left to lose and am a dangerous individual. Join me.

I'm waiting for a moment that I hope never comes. But in the meantime, I'm preparing myself mentally and physically, and I am gathering supplies.

I'm still hoping that the Midterms alter the power structure and puts up some insurmountable roadblocks, and eventually we can find our way clear of this mess. Unfortunately, I think their response to that will be an enormous increase in violence against citizens, which will require violence in return to stop them.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The key to survival is cooperation. You would be better getting to know your neighbors than stacking food.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I know my neighbors. I'm stocking up.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 1 points 3 hours ago

Oh shit. Best of luck, guy, I'm with you.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah thats the upside of watching society go mad.

If we die, its like... Meh. Probably didnt miss anything amazing. In fact, may have spared us a lot of misery even.

That being said, I will watch the madness, but stay focused and not get involved in it.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

The concert started out good, but in the middle it wasn't so good, and then it started pouring, and the crowd energy isn't there anymore, so it's fine to leave early to get around traffic.
