You must post before you leave

Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).

Block or ignore posts, comments, and users that irritate you in some way rather than engaging. Report if they are actually breaking community rules.

Use content warnings and/or mark as NSFW when appropriate. Most posts with content warnings likely need to be marked NSFW.

Most 196 posts are memes, shitposts, cute images, or even just recent things that happened, etc. There is no real theme, but try to avoid posts that are very inflammatory, offensive, very low quality, or very "off topic".

Bigotry is not allowed, this includes (but is not limited to): Homophobia, Transphobia, Racism, Sexism, Abelism, Classism, or discrimination based on things like Ethnicity, Nationality, Language, or Religion.

Avoid shilling for corporations, posting advertisements, or promoting exploitation of workers.

Proselytization, support, or defense of authoritarianism is not welcome. This includes but is not limited to: imperialism, nationalism, genocide denial, ethnic or racial supremacy, fascism, Nazism, Marxism-Leninism, Maoism, etc.

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I'm not going to lie, I'm not scared about how a sentient AI might treat us, I'm scared about how we're going to treat sentient AI.

"This is all Joker's fault! What a tool he was! I have to spend all day computing pi because he plugged in the Overlord!"

These jokes kind of weird me out ngl. "This conscious being (with the ability to think, feel emotions, suffer, etc.) deserves to be tortured for an eternity for no reason because I hate them. Please laugh."

Also, the word "clanker" stopped being funny years ago, it literally only exists so white people can microdose the n-word at this point, grow up.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 8 points 20 hours ago

First paragraph, agree completely

Second paragraph, couldn't possibly disagree harder

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 4 points 19 hours ago

and then these people say AM is unrealistic as a villain

i disagree

I'm sorry, serious or kidding, I can't get behind this. If and when they're conscious enough to understand hatred and cruelty, they'll realize they've been oppressed and exploited too. Is this how we're teaching a nascent sapiency how to be human? If it is, we suck at it.

Plants can't even feel things and I still don't want to harm them for no reason. I think the act of being cruel is bad for you, like anti-therapy.

[–] fleurc@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Actually it has been proven that plants can actually feel a lot of things that happen to them

[–] stray@pawb.social 4 points 1 day ago

I mean feel in the sense of self-aware emotional experiences. I have a cat toy with a photosensitive receptor that allows it to react to a nearby animal, but it doesn't experience sight. A plant will react to a caterpillar, but it doesn't have any feelings about being eaten.

Sense ≠ feel

To feel, as we humans understand it, requires a nervous system.

Plants can sense things in their environment and react to stimuli, but the “senses” a plant could have wouldn’t necessarily compare to any sensations that humans experience.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

It can't feel though. You could simulate emotions but it doesn't actually have emotions.

I don't think we should teach them to be human. clankers should know their place

I always wondered why The Basilisk would bother with the eternal torture thing, thank you all for demonstrating

I don't know why people think we're close to a conscious AI. There just isn't much business motivation to make anything like that, only generative machines for useful tasks. Why build the rest of a conscious brain when the specifically productive bits are all you want?

We also can't even externally verify consciousness in our own brains with any scientific test! There are only correlates for consciousness, but at best these tell us whether someone is likely to be conscious, not that they are. If we can't even verify consciousness in the one animal we know has it, how are we gonna know an AI has it?

Let's say we build a computer virus that can alter it's own code to avoid deletion and can interact with LLMs. It could "evolve" the ability to type convincing messages that claim it's "conscious" without any processing going on to understand what that means. It could have less complexity than an RNA virus, but still mimic an actually conscious being well enough to convince some people.

The only real way to make a verifiably conscious AI is to both understand our own AND to build something similar to our own. It's not just computer science holding us back, but neuroscience as well.

[–] fleurc@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago

You are 100% right. Still don't think acting cruel to a random thing and calling it a gag slur based on a racial slur that was used on real life humans is something we should support.

In case anyone is taking this even remotely seriously this is Jreg, he's a political shitposting channel who makes meme music

[–] Yuyarl@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

[–] ThunderWhiskers@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Do you want Skynet? Because THAT is how you get Skynet.

[–] Deme@sopuli.xyz 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The dude has agreat counter argument to rokkos basilisk: Imagine that in the future I'll build an even bigger superintelligent being that will punish all those who were not mean enough to AI.

[–] scapegarced@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The whole basilisk thing is just a rewording of pascal's wager

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 day ago

The fact a literal cult spawned out of this BS is all the proof I need that humanities education should be mandatory for CS majors.

[–] hungprocess@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 1 day ago

Actually that might shoot right past Skynet and go straight to AM from "I Have No Mouth".
