I buy HDDs on vinted now. Huge bargains to be had. Fast enough for fully legal torrenting of open source software and public domain works.

If you're giving them as a gift, you might as well get a high quality pair of socks. Wool, non-China crap.
Few people will ever buy them for themselves, because of the price, but the difference is often huge.
Seriously, my wife got me some merino wool socks with silk in it and those are so so nice to wear, they are not even close to being comparable to my other socks.

most things that I acquire are pretty specific like tools or books or musical instruments, socks and underwear, etc, and I came to select those things through trial and error. I still appreciate gifts, but...
my ex bought me two things I wouldn't have bought for myself but absolutely loved: the red book - a red leather bound copy of the lord of the rings in one volume and a hello kitty fender strat. then my (adult) children got together and bought me a t-shirt that is a portrait of Anthony Bourdain using sort of ascii art of the first chapter of kitchen confidential. I struggle with depression and it was like an acknowledgement of that and them telling me they loved me.
goddammit I'm crying.
if I could receive one gift I'd pick for myself, it would be more time with them.
I recently got my dad a pair of socks that said "I'm not sleeping, I'm resting my eyes" on the bottom, and an extremely garish shirt he presumably can wear in public to embarrass my mom. It doesn't always have to be booze!
I mean, a knife is a great gift. I wouldn't recommend storing one in whiskey though.
One knife is a great gift so make it count. I own one nice knife made by a blacksmith in California. That knife is my camping and anything-outdoors knife. It will undoubtedly outlast me and be handed down.
What if the knife stored wiskey?
A gift card for any hobby related stuff is way better than any guide. I cannot dream to know which bee hat or hive brush (if thats a thing) would be an upgrade, but Im certain that he can pick out something himself that he might have "wanted" but not needed, and if I stipulate that the gift card is for want and not need, he will buy something nice.
I did the same with a bike store a few years ago and he upgraded the pedals so he can use them both with ordinary shoes as well as the "locking" shoes.
I know a lot of people don't like being given money because it's impersonal, so I like to pair a gift card with something creative: baked goods or candy, a mug, an ornament, a picture or card, etc. You can source materials secondhand or find them outdoors. The food route is especially useful for people who aren't into small decorative things.
I would be happy with just the gift part personally. If someone takes the effort to make me something it means a lot to me. A gift card or money doesn't really do much for me.
Great addition :) Nice way to personalize. In our family its highly unsual to get money (cas or transfer), that only happens if the giver is unsure which shop is preferred and it usually means a joint shopping trip. Thats also a bonding moment where the reciever can talk about the hobby and why the item(s) chosen are picked
I love shopping trips! My uncle took me on one when I was a teenager and it's one of my best memories.

I have such a hard time buying for people and being bought for. I mean I appreciate anything I get because it IS really the thought that matters to me, but...Like, if I want something, I'll just buy it. If I haven't bought it already, it's too expensive to get for me as a gift.
I'm literally only holding off on purchasing some things right now so I can send them to my family as gift ideas.
I found a knife in the woods of Mt. Hood and refurbished it for my friend that "never had a good kitchen knife.' It might have previously been used for murder, but that's a good man gift, if you grind it up real nice and recreate the pommel correctly, it'll do true to you.
Being found abandoned and refurbished makes it better, because now it has a story :)

Really does suck. My dad had a problem with alcohol and I always refused to partake in that unlike my brothers but he doesn’t really have hobbies and so all the gift ideas sucked as it’s beer.
I get him gloves and scarfs now 😂
