To us: A former Toyota CEO kisses the ring.

To Trump: Mr. Domo Arigato bent the knee, this will look good for me.

To MAGA: We don't want your jap crap, go back to China.

Dudes at a NASCAR event. The sport that had to specifically root out racists which was somehow a bad thing for conservatives.

Japan loves facism

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago

Jesus Christ may as well have done a photo op with Trump's micro peen in his mouth wtf. I actually liked Toyota up until this point.

What exactly does this "investing" mean here? Do they essentially donate money to Trump? Do they buy American factories/companies? Do they build new factories? Do they just announce and investment and then nothing happens for a long time?

In other words, who makes the profit here? Did they rip off the Trump without him noticing or did they get ripped off and can't do anything about it? Is "investing" another way of saying "ASiAnS BuY MuRIcaN ComPnAIEs!!!1!" that is more popular with the maga crowd?

All the reports I've seen about this just regurgitate the government speech and give no useful details what's really going on here.

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 4 points 19 hours ago

My guess is they're capitulating for forgiveness on the EV mandates.

The best Toyotas seem to be just the plain inline 4's and inline 6's. They did not have a good run IMO with the Prius platform on their SUVs and probably are bootlicking to get exemptions made.

Check's in the mail, babe. I promise I'm good for it. Honey, don't be mad, just let your tariffs down a little. Come on, it'll be just like old times.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

That old man went full pandering for the bastard.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 4 points 20 hours ago

I suppose you could call this radical lobbying.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

I’d say we should boycott Toyota, but their 220mi range piece of shit EV with a 9” display for 45k$ pretty much does them in without trying.

[–] humble_boatsman@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I know its a lot of shocked not shocked but Toyota has been a consistent bull shit company on environmental impact. It actually did shock me to learn this

Toyota has been a consistent shit company

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

The bar is set so low by their American peers that Toyota can flop over it.

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 18 hours ago

Did he also get head?

[–] henfredemars@lemdro.id 109 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Headline is wrong. Former CEO.

[–] johnwicksdog@aussie.zone 81 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fair call, but it’s worth adding he is still the chairman and part of the Toyoda dynasty and clearly representing the brand.

[–] henfredemars@lemdro.id 40 points 1 day ago

This is true. I more have a bone to pick with intentionally misleading headlines. It sounds way more punishing for it to be the CEO, but that’s just not true. The author didn’t need to lie to get the point across.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Oh thank God. I just paid off my Avalon and can't really afford another car rn.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 3 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Well if it's already paid off you're not really giving them any more money so it's fine right

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 3 points 15 hours ago

I got it slightly used from not a dealership and got my own financing through my bank. So I extra didn't give them shit!

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

You'd only be giving them money if it's leased through a Toyota dealership or financed through Toyota's loan department.

I have a RAV4 that I financed through the dealer when I bought it, but I refinanced that bitch after like 2 months. The interest rate was unbelievably high. Glad to know I'm not giving any more money to fascist bullshit.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 15 hours ago

Dealerships are such a giving scam! I worked at one when I first moved to a new town and the way they talk about customers behind their backs is disgusting! Truly dehumanizing them and turning them into nothing more than walking legal theft targets.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Good Lord I've seen the headlines but that photo paints one hell of a picture.

They produce a lot of trucks... strategic

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I still haven't gotten over hearing that recording of people who were about to die because they couldn't use the brakes in their Toyota.

Seems I was right to not forget.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Way ahead of you.

[–] cubism_pitta@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

When you ride bikes you can minimize the amount of money you give to shitty people who already have too much money!

[–] ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com 26 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Toyota already had been donating to the congresspeople in 2021 who were planning that coup by refusing to certify. So yep, if you haven't been already, please do.

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Honest question: Assume that I do in fact need a car. I've been driving Toyota since college on account of it hitting pretty much the sweet spot of affordability and reliability. Is there another car company that hits around that same realm that is less morally compromised?

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

For a new vehicle probably Mazda or Honda.

I’d love to give Ford a chance but the post 2020 reliability has not looked great. I had 07 Escape for 15 years that was an absolute work horse.

Toyota is seriously missing out on electric vehicles. Hybrids are overly complicated.

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Didn't they fuck up by doubling down on fuel cells too?

[–] Tilgare@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

I mean, it's a fuck up in hindsight... They clearly saw something in the technology that the rest of the market hasn't. It IS a viable option for EV's, but it feels at this point like it's a failed standard akin to Betamax vs VHS or HD-DVD vs Blu-ray. We've got thousands of BEV chargers across America now, and about 50 hydrogen fueling stations (in California only). I don't know if there is a market for both at this point... And there hasn't been for a while. Unbelievable that they're STILL sticking with it.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Agreed. Why drive around with two complete drivetrains.

Lol kowtowing

[–] fin@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Damn. I'll never buy Toyota. I hope Mazda won't do that.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Mazda and Toyota are partners. Mazdas are actually more reliable than Toyota now. Toyota has a massive recall fir blowing up engines. Their new land cruiser rides like shit and has less interior room than a ford ranger which rides better also.
