Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Reactionaries work according to a ruleset: "Rules apply to everyone who are not us, and everyone who is us, needs no rules."

They are hypocrites and a plague of the first order.

They are not hypocrites, they are fascists. Fascism prioritizes power over rationality or rules based order.

They flaunt the fact that they don’t care about the rules because it’s a way to show they have power that others lack. It’s a domination thing.

Fascism and hypocrisy overlap often times.

Power is not just 'hard', it's also 'soft'. Fascists often live in denial of that fact. If you as a "man" need a fist to make people listen - because you can't do so by your own word, then you already lost.

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Its not hypocritical; they're just lying and want you dead.

[–] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

This is exactly it and why I hate seeing all the self congratulatory gotchas on social media as if they care about the logical consistency of anything they are saying.

You didn't just get one over on them, you expended precious mental effort arguing against a firehose of bullshit, and not fighting against it.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hmm, no they're also hypocrites, it's not mutually exclusive

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They are not hypocrites if they don’t believe in any of the stuff in the first place. Which they don’t. None of them do.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

That's a pretty fair assessment, is it hypocrisy if you're not aware of the irony, I would argue so, but your point still stands, they don't care for the truth at all. If they did, they might have to contend with the fact that they are monsters

[–] BananaOnionJuice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 62 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And they can't be mad when a FTM marries a MTF, because it's hetero with extra steps.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 44 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not like they need reasons to be mad, it's more of a default position.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

the default position is being scared of the unknown, but most conservatives can only handle the emotion of anger so the fear gets expressed that way

i honestly find that pretty sad. so many people could be so much better if only they were taught to learn about new things instead of being scared and avoiding new things as much as possible

[–] ordnance_qf_17_pounder@reddthat.com 26 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

It proves that transphobia is illogical.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

phobia is defined as irrational fear after all

[–] zea_64@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Oh, there's definitely a logic to it. They just lie and make up rationalizations, when in reality it's as simple as you're an out group and deserve punishment for that.

I somehow managed to be in a sort of omnisexual relationship with my ex.

I'm a trans girl, full in her transition (legal name change and everything) and suspected born inter. My ex was a trans girl early in her transition and hadn't had her legal name and gender changed.

  • for transphobes (my dad), we where in a gay relationship
  • for the government, we where in a straight relationship
  • for outsiders / regulars, we where in a lesbian relationship
  • in actuality, we where in a aroace relationship where gender just didn't play a role at all

We somehow managed to represent every single letter in LGBTQIA

Did you yell out bingo when you realised you got them all?

[–] SquishedFly@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Nope, just got a steam achievement pop-up sadly

[–] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

See, what all these gotchas miss, is they have absolutely no intentions nor pretense of caring about consistency.

If you're an out group, they hate you as an out group, and thats it.

Any words that happen to come out of their face holes or their slender typing sausages are just there to batter you down until they can do what they really want to do and what they are increasingly becoming emboldened to do (violence).

The MAGAts are happy to see ICE committing violence against the out groups. This is the primary thing they voted for. They're happy to see Donald enact discriminatory laws against trans people.

People have gotta realize that any time spent arguing against bad faith points is time wasted on burning yourself out accomplishing nothing and or time that could be spent trying to get people who don't pay attention to pay attention rather than trying to argue against people who actively wish you physical harm for your inalienable traits.

[–] s@piefed.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

I don’t agree with conservatives’ way of life and they shouldn’t be allowed to get married

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

How can they oppress you if they don't know how to categorize you? Up yours, woke moralist!

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 week ago

im happy for this person-

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A regular reminder for us all to search for contradictions in our rationalizations of our own behavior

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you dont try to be rational, you can get down to zero pretty quick.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The only goal of being rational is to communicate ideas with others. It's not something that makes you inherently smart

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

the goal of being rational is to communicate ideas with others

Wait, that's what it's for!?

It's fucking useless for that shit.

Right? I thought it was a sort of self-defence against being swindled, lied to, or otherwise taken advantage of by malicious thought patterns.

Trying to use reason to communicate - especially with others who don't share your commitment to reason - is insane.

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

This one simple trick!
