I think the modern day approach is to take an incredibly hot person, and give them whatever demon-y fetish (red/blue skin, tail, horns, etc) you're into.

I was baffled what a tiefling might be. Then I remembered I'm a native German speaker.

"Tiefling" looks like a German word, "tief" meaning "deep". As a matter of fact, that's exactly where they got the name from, referring to their "lower planes" heritage. And it's in German because, well, no idea. Maybe Sigil has a significant German minority?
German cuz spoken deutsch is the most evil sounding language, duh. Beaten only by latin sung in choir. Or latin / runic writing.
