Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

People used to complain that Teletubbies had nothing to offer a child’s development. Now in 2025 my nephew watches the same half hour cgi marble race on YouTube two or three times a day, every day

he’s 27 years old

two or three times a day

That's rookie numbers. Videos for kids are known to gather bazillions of views, because toddlers in particular watch them hundreds of times on repeat.

Developmentally, could this be related to wanting to read the same book over and over? Because that's normal. But I don't know how it changes with watching videos except intuitively it doesn't seem as healthy.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

Well, making a whole ass real marble raceway is a lot of work and definitely not something that would survive a kid walking in.

Just say Smith, it don't matter. Nunna dis matters.

Please do not undercut me in front of the child. I am thirty or forty years old, and I do not need this.

I think the key differences are quality and time spent.

You stay up, watch a 15 minute (10 actually, ala US tv commercials) episode of ATHF and thats it. Maybe you watch Sealab:2021 afterwards too. At worst, youre extremely smoothbrained and watch Squidbillies too.

Okay, so what is the total brain rot time? Like 30 minutes a night? 1 hour tops? Only on weeknights really? You couldn't watch it all day. You could change the channel to something else, but it wasn't "that", all day.

Whatever you change it to might not be "great" but it was still moderated FCC compliant content. Like, your channel scrolling isnt intermingled with a adult man telling children to be racist and abuse women. Not seamlessly anyways.

Compare that the never ending, ever scrolling, available whenever brainrot that is TikTok/YoutubeShorts/etcetcetc. Its not even close. Kids are watching Minecraft videos and then listening to Asmongold atop of SubwaySurfers. Engaging with content and comments all day, everyday on demand.

They are not forced to "change the channel" or go do something else. And what's on "the channel" is (essentially) unmoderated content to children who dont know if something is real or the wider context.

What was that show with the skeleton that was taking over the world?

[–] korendian@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Tbf, I would watch adult swim for hours when I was a kid. I'd watch all the other nonsensical brain rot shows that went on around the same time, space ghost, the brak show, etc. Totally incoherent, but absolutely hilarious.

Beavis and butt head was weird, but it made way too much sense to be called brainrot.

At the top: state-owned propaganda network that intentionally pushes short, often harmful content to the west, while carefully curating educational videos for their home market. Full of zero budget zero quality dross.

Bottom: scripted show that's written by a team of comedians with several successful career voice actors, animators and musicians. Every second of every episode is planned and catefully executed.

These are not remotely the same..

Thanks to OP for making the connection though. When I watched Adult Swim specifically Aqua Teen Hunger Force, I had no words to describe how strange and nonsensical but also weird and funny it was. But Brainrot in the modern sense describes it perfectly.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't even know what I'm looking at. That an actual tv show?

[–] treesapx@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a very funny show called Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Completely unrelated: humor is subjective.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

"Funny" is subjective. Personally I don't understand how the show is considered comedy. To me the entire thing is just a bunch of nonsensical lines of dialog stitched together. Where's the humor? Is the complete lack of any sort of meaning or even a basic plot supposed to be the joke?

[–] radiouser@crazypeople.online 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There are some hit and miss episodes but there are some very subtle and well planned out jokes or references. I'm not trying to convince you you're wrong but adolescent me loved this show.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

It's the kind of humor that's funny because there's a shared understanding. You can't explain why 6-7 is/was funny to gen alpha, it just is funny to a certain group of people that all grew up at the same time in the same zeitgeist.

Recognizing something as funny or not helps solidify your identity in a peer group and the identity of others outside of the peer group. At least that's how it seems to my lay person understanding.

Same with Aqua Teen Hunger Force, you can't really explain what makes it funny, because it is so subtle. But to the right age group who grew up with the right background, it just hits in a certain way.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The chaotic and absurd nature of the show is part of the humor, it's like smiling friends or portlandia. If you aren't a fan of absurdist humor you aren't going to like it. Being high as fuck also helps.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah okay I could see that. It's probably a lot funnier with some weed... Or even better, I bet the show would be a lot more fun and make a lot more sense on acid. Most of the Adult Swim lineup pairs nicely with psychedelics, especially 25i to enhance the colors or LSD to crank up the absurdity. Either one would work.

[–] heavy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

yt shorts is more brainrotting.
