Following the launch of a massive federal interagency task force in partnership with state law enforcement, Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee pledged that the “Memphis Safe Task Force” would be a permanent fixture.

Last month, the White House published a presidential memorandum titled “Restoring Law and Order in Memphis,” which orders 13 federal government agencies and offices to coordinate. It states the “objective shall be to end street and violent crime in Memphis to the greatest possible extent,” and lists actions including “hypervigilant policing, aggressive prosecution, complex investigations, financial enforcement, and large-scale saturation of besieged neighborhoods with law enforcement personnel.”

Lee told reporters on Tuesday, “We’ve just begun,” and said the program will last “for months,” before stating that in some form it will continue “forever.”

“We do know that this is gonna last for months, and we have just begun. In fact, I will tell you that it will last forever,” he said. “Because what we believe will happen is the numbers of law enforcement agents from different agencies will change, depending on the mission at the moment.”

He described a “collaboration that is happening right now between U.S. Marshal Service and the Memphis Police Department, and the FBI, and the DEA, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.”

“That collaboration will be here from now on,” said Lee. “So this operation, in some ways, may never end.”

Critics blasted the governor.

“As I predicted,” noted authoritarianism expert Ruth Ben-Ghiat, the “aim is a ‘domestic forever war.'”

The Atlantic’s Dr. Norman Ornstein, a political scientist, wrote: “Fascist. Pure fascist.”

Columnist and “recovering attorney” Wajahat Ali added, “Forever occupation, eh?”

This is literally what a police state looks like.

I just heard a counter terrorism expert from University of Chicago saying that the deployments there are very clearly designed to be permanent as well.

They very closely follow the long term counter insurgency operation model he called search and destroy, pointing out they've been buying up land to use as Forward Operating Bases from which to launch raids and others through which to collect targeting and other intel. They brought in multiple agencies for different mission types.

You just don't make that investment for a short term operation. He speculated that the ice and other budget increases in the omnibus bill were probably specifically for this plan.

They're planning on occupying Chicago exactly like they did Baghdad.

Yeah I think so. I didn't catch his name but they mentioned he wrote the book Dying to Win, which seems to be authored by the same Robert Pape from that foreign affairs article.

US used search and destroy in Vietnam. Perfect example of the Imperial Boomerang

weird use of "under fire" when the fascists are the side doing all the shooting

why doesn't rawstory's editor use a dictionary? are they stupid?

"blasted" is such an inappropriate term when there are SS literally throwing chemical bombs at people and shooting priests in the face with pepper balls

see gang there's this part of written english called "verbs" and your sposed to use them to accurately describe things that happen

*edit grammar

Argument I had with somebody in the Memphis subreddit over a week ago. They're not going anywhere. Official indefinite occupation requested by their own governor.

Ok... they're going after red state cities now. Time to stand up, people.

It's a blue city in a red state
