crazypeople.online is configured to disallow down votes. But someone managed to downvote my post.

UPDATE

I guess it’s not visible now that some up votes came. But it would be nice to understand how this works. I suppose dbzer0.com allows downvotes so it perhaps keeps a separate count that can go negative.

The downvotes don't exist for users on local accounts or anyone on another instance with downvoting disabled. That setting is determined by your home instance.

To put it simply- we can't stop the fediverse from downvoting posts on our instance. We can only remove them from the feed for local users and disable downvoting on the local instance via an admin panel setting. That's essentially what disabling downvoting does at the instance level.

Updating to show you how your post appears to our instance currently:

You are correct, db0 allows downvoting. Each instance has their own vote totals.

What you are seeing is your local instance's voting data. This can look very different from instance to instance, mainly because not all instances communicate with each other, but also because not all instances federate downvote data. From our side they simply do not exist. Here's what your other post looks like to us right now:

Post Title

Total Votes

This data is public and there are tools to view it without moderator or admin abilities. If you look it up from the db0 side you'll see who's downvoting you, which may or may not be something you want to see.

You may also notice the downvote arrow is missing. That's because crazypeople.online users are unable to downvote since our instance has that setting disabled. Why we've chosen to disable downvoting is outlined in our FAQ.
