They are a death cult trying to bring about the end times.

Well, they also believe in a ghost in the sky... ๐Ÿ˜…

It's performative

Their faith is shallow. It's a thin veneer of respectability that they hide behind so that they can hate, but kid themselves that they're good people

Trump doesn't just enable their hate, he tells them that their hatred is righteous

I despise religion, but there are many religious people in 'Murica who recognise Trump for what he is

The religious people flocking to Trump's banner are the bigots.

Those who hate people who aren't white, those who are homophobes, those who fear other faiths

They fear anything different, because they are small, stupid people

Because religion is all about accepting stuff to be true because someone told you so, without thinking for yourself, aka faith.

It lets you justify anything because anyone in the "in" group (Christian, Republican, etc.) is by definition good, and has such everything they do is good. If it seems bad, there's a grand hidden plan you don't know about.

People who are beguiled by ego stoking fiction over fact are his natural prey.

It's also not just him, but basically an industry of Big Data profiling and proprietary Cambridge Analytica social network profiling who are deciding which bubbles can influence people the most and creating them by cherrypicking contradictory claims and evidence to whatever most suits appealing to them. Whatever money can buy for whatever can serve money the best. Social networks are human slaughterhouses to them.

Because Christianity is all about receiving forgiveness regardless of what sins you've committed

"He's just like me" they say after seeing him commit atrocities

They think by propping him up that they'll inevitably receive forgiveness too, since they're less horrible by contrast

Because American Christians are not Christians. I don't think they can even read.

Not one of them that claim to believe the bible is the "word of god" have ever read this passage:

Matthew 25:40-45 King James Version

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

He is the spiteful vindictive old testament god they really want, not that touchy-feely woke new testament hippie.
