Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

Yep. I say this as a resident of the United States and it will take at minimum decades to fix the damage that Trump has caused in just nine months. More likely (assuming the US survives) it will take multiple generations to fix the damage from Trumps second term.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Seconded as another American - the brain drain alone from deterring immigration by conservatives may make that process even longer (or require a new system of governance entirely)

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Also the brain drain by actively fighting to prevent scientific research.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 month ago

Yet another debuff to the pile XD

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

And that's only nine months how long to fix the full term damage.

You figure? You figure people who elect a psychopath who threatens to destroy my country economically before annexing it as the fifty-first state may have lost a lot of trust?

That's just crazy talk!

Thursday’s poll found that 42 per cent of Canadians said they believe Carney will succeed in negotiating a new trade deal with the Trump administration.

Why? I don't want Canada to have a trade deal with the USA. I want Canada to isolate the USA. A trade wall, ideally armed with machine guns and flamethrowers. Let them stew in their own juices while we trade with countries that aren't prone to electing obvious man-toddlers into the highest possible office.

This is so heartbreaking. I live on the border, frequently visit Ontario and Quebec, even honeymooned in the Maritimes. It's hard to imagine that I may never be able to do that ever again, but here we are.

I recall how bad I felt waking up in November 2024 knowing that awful things were going to happen, but alienating our closest ally was not one of them. Stay safe, Canada, I hope to see you again some time.

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 month ago

Canadian here close to the border. I used to visit your country somewhat regularly, but I don’t think I’ll ever go down south again. My wife has some extended family in the states and they’ll never visit up here so I guess we just aren’t seeing them ever again. It’s unfortunate but that’s what video calls are for I guess.

As a Canadian, I say come visit still. We’d love to have you as long as you’re respectful and don’t bring pro-Trump speech with you (and given you’re on Lemmy I’m sure you’re the kind of person we’d welcome with open arms up here).

[–] ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's really sad.

As a country we decided to get back with our psychopathic abusive ex. And now that psychopathic ex is doing the absolutely typical thing for an abuser: isolating us so we have no choice but to stay with them.

So it's sad that Canada is totally justified in feeling that way, but it's double frustrating that it also plays exactly into what Trump wants.

No one is against Americans vacationing in Canada. Many of us chose not to go down because of this stupid economic warfare the administration started. But that’s just business, as they say. It’s about asserting economic independence. Come visit. No worries, buddy.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

Seconded. Just make sure your American papers are in order for when you return.

4 in 10 thinks we can fix it at some point.

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 month ago (3 children)

If the USA gets their act together and can show that they can elect sane politicians 12+ years after trump/vance term ends.

That's my hope.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 15 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Their system prevents them from electing sane politicians.

4 in 10 already distrusted the US.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmynsfw.com 30 points 1 month ago (15 children)

The US has become a laughing stock

Most of the world has considered it untrustworthy for decades already

Lol. Canada was one of the only countries that used to trust America. No one wants to play with the bully

I don't even like the idea of flying over the USA to go on vacation to Mexico. We might just save up and go to a hot part of Europe instead, it's just a lot more flying.

That is because we actually can't.

The US has been a shit show since the end of WWII and they've fucked over countless countries and people, mostly for greed. It's laws are mostly setup first for greed, then for humans. Don't trust that place, whatever president comes next will at best only be marginally better than the current shit stain

Seems four out of ten Canadians aren’t paying attention.

[–] PoliteDudeInTheMood@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

My parents are in this 4 of 10. They watch Fox News, donate regularly to the Republican party even though they are Canadian, they do not donate to the conservative party of Canada (I dunno), call me every time Carney does something they dislike because I voted Liberal, and still spend a good chunk of their time in Florida where they own property and are proud of it.

Trump has become an unpopular subject as my sister will lose her shit at family gatherings so they no longer mention his name. But are big supporters!

In my experience about 4 out of 10 people don't know anything about critical thinking; what it is or how to do it.

Fair enough. We did a lot these last nine months to piss of the rest of the world.

[–] Geodad@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

6/10 Americans won't trust America again also.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 month ago

Came here to say this. The last decade has truly flipped my perception of the rest of america on its head. Well, my perception of conservatives, at least. I always knew that people are people and there's a spectrum of good to bad. I've come to realize that Republicans literally do not care about trying to help anyone else unless they see some sort of personal return of either money or power. I've seen so many people that I thought were "a good, slightly dumb person misguided by politics" fully throw themselves behind Trump. Everything that they say they believe in is apparently a lie, since they so readily line up to worship a person so antithetical to what they pretend to believe. I can not and do not trust anyone that identifies with Republicans or even conservatism at this point.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 month ago

As an American, same.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago

2 of them are lying, because they do not have the money to go down there anyways. 1 of them has to go down for work and the other is Danielle Smith.

[–] IHeartBadCode@fedia.io 16 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I don't blame the Canadians.

The other four trust them exactly as much as we trusted them before, which is zero.

[–] ristoril_zip@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 month ago

that's completely fair

for all the terrible things both political parties wrought globally from the end of WWII until a Jan 20, 2017, they were united (more or less) in a commitment to being a rules and laws based main even if it hurt "their side" from time to time.

Even Reagan's "11th Amendment" would be set aside from time to time to preserve America's standing in the world.

Not so any more. And i don't actually know if it's possible to get that reputation back.

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 month ago

I don't blame y'all

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (3 children)

And they shouldn't.

[–] barooboodoo@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 month ago (10 children)

Trust them to do what exactly? Were y'all asleep during covid? You can't trust humans to put a mask on during a pandemic. But I don't go into every interaction assuming the worst of the other person. Now if we're talking about the American government? Yeah that's a valid sentiment.
