[Opinion] prefixOpinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn't explictly endorse.

Anyone on a H-1B (or any other kind of visa) should get out as long as they still can.

[–] irotsoma@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 8 months ago

Nah they'll be able to get out, likely for free if they don't mind a bit of detainment first. What they should be doing is finding a new place to work or seeing if their current employers will move them to an office in another country. And big companies should be expanding their offices in other countries to make up for the loss of workers, or moving their offices back to places where American tech workers are willing to live rather than moving to conservative states and then pretending there aren't educated workers for them to hire in the US.

Best voluntary deport before they kidnap and detain you indefinitely.

Yeah, this.

I'm in support of changes to the H1B to curb rampant corporate abuse of it. I'm however not in support of how I suspect the fallout will be handled, presumably by ICE.

These companies "advising" visa holders are only looking after corporate interest and trying to buy time, they are not looking out for what's best for these workers.

"Sure, you may all go to Turbo Gulag. That's not really my problem. But if you travel and I have pay 0.001% of my profits to get your new visa, that is my problem, so don't see your family anymore, please."

This isn't about deporting people.

This is about new H1-B's coating $100k.

Companies want their H1-Bs back on the U.S. so they can avoid paying the additional cost as long as they can.

I do think companies abuse these visa's, but this is a really fucking stupid approach.

MAGA really has gone full retard. There is not two brain cells among them.

They are absolutely incapable of affecting any change without causing consequences that are worse than the perceived initial problem.

I guess it doesn't matter when your base, all the way up to the VP, are a bunch of bootlicking morons.

They don't want change. That's never been the goal. The goal is to create enemies, but make them people who are not able to fight back. Fascism requires an enemy to "fight" in order to get people to ignore the bad stuff and focus on the fight. Fascism can't survive in a peaceful, happy society. The mistake Nazis made was picking a group that was too large and they didn't already have a noose around.

It'd be funny if all the big tech Seattle-area HQ's moved to Vancouver just due to this.
