I realized I don't often see spools on bikes when I'm out, and am wondering if people take them off when not using them.

Always on. KTM 890 Adventure R. I use the spools plus a prop to lift the bike when I get a flat on the road. That’s much lighter than a center stand. Also it makes lubing the chain that much easier at home.

I don't see the harm in leaving them on all the time.

you're just seeing bikes that either aren't self maintained or whose owners use the platform style stands. no one is uninstalling their spools.

Always on for me. I bought a stand that utilizes them when I'm doing maintenance.
