Belgium joins the ranks of Australia, France, Canada and the UK, all who have pledged to recognise a Palestinian state at the UNGA next week in a bid to ramp up pressure on Netanyahu’s government to end the assault on Gaza and alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The recognition depends on conditions that won’t be met, so it is dead on arrival. Israel’s response is predictable: in public they’ll condemn Belgium and say it supports terrorism. In private they’ll laugh about getting away with it again, and continue murdering people.

In tech Jesus" words, "an announcement of the announcement".

You know you don't need to wait, you can say it now. But then again at least they are saying that they are going to do something, eventually. Better than nothing I guess.

According to politico it is worse

Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said the recognition would happen only after Hamas releases all Israeli hostages and no longer manages Palestine

What a bunch of wankers!

The measures are set to take place by royal decree after the last hostage held under Hamas captivity in Gaza is released, and once the group no longer has any role in managing Palestine.

I am reading correctly? The sanctions will only be implemented once Hamas releases all hostages and no longer control gaza? If it is true than this is so stupid because israel consider everybody hamas

And it's only a couple decades past the point that the words and actions of Israeli government officials made it clear that a two state solution is impossible due to Israel not respecting national boundaries any more than their own occupation checkpoints! Bra-fucking-vo, Belgium! 🙄

The only possible peaceful solution is to dissolve the fascist apartheid regime of Israel and replace it with a democratic, secular and ethnically egalitarian system, 1990s South Africa style.

That is hard because Israel has a lot of racism and hate in the population. I think both sides hate each other which makes democracy difficult.

A better plan would be to setup a DMZ with clear consequences if it is crossed.

That's what they used to say about aparteith south africa too.

Don't compare the oppressed hate and the oppresor hate. The oppressed hate end when they gain freedom

As for the DMZ it didn't prevent israel from attacking egypt and occupying gaza and the west bank

An palestinian stste with no palestinians at this point.

I don't think it is that deadly but we are looking at a death toll of 6 figures or more.

What's worse is that death counts don't take in account the long term societal damage. Children are crowning up in a war zone without their basic needs being met.

My only concern is, from my understanding, is Palestinians are classified under different rules because they are considered “stateless individuals” in many of these countries. If they recognize the state of Palestine what will happen to their status and protections, and their ability to claim asylum? Someone please guide my understanding for the immigration/visa implications?
