That would be outstanding! And something is desperately needed there for non-car travelers. I’m impatient for it already
As someone who would be there to enjoy the city, the river, the museum, I see far more value in the project described in the article than something more utilitarian. Not all of us are just trying to get from one place to another alive
Yes, the "Nature Islands" sound beneficial in several ways.
Even with all the bike lane improvements, that stretch is primarily a busy automobile road. A bike/pedestrian first crossing would be great.
The feasibility study, authored in 2023, proposes a $302 million winding pedestrian bridge that connects the Leverett Circle, Charles River Dam Road, and the museum to Lechmere Canal and Cambridge.
The multi-use paths will be used by walkers and bikers, the study says, connecting a series of islands built as part of the project. The islands will attract wildlife and simulate river ecosystems, which the museum hopes to incorporate into its programming.
Sounds very cool, but I would be happy with just a straight bridge if it could be done faster/cheaper.
The project is in early development stages, and MassDOT will begin to engage neighbors and other stakeholders and identify a funding source, a spokesperson for MassDOT said. Then, the timeline for the project will be finalized.
