Just FYI all home depots deploy license plate reading technology

That is probably why ICE is targeting home depot because they need to meet a quota and they know they can find people there

I hope ICE melts.

It's interesting because the person was looking for work, I thought ICE said they were going after criminals?

Very California hed. "The 210 Freeway" vs. I-210. The AP Style issues with that single sentence in the body are enough to make me twitchy. Setting aside that mess, the time element is in the wrong place (should be after "killed" to avoid that unpleasant "on" after what for some reason is being treated as a proper noun).

Then we have the absurdity of the state abbreviation. First of all, if it's in the same state, you don't use it at all. If for whatever reason you feel the need to in your local coverage area, postal codes are never indicated.

That is what you chose to focus on?

As a copyeditor? Yes. I read the full story, but it's a bit of a mess overall.

It made me wince too. But right now, the article's headline says:

‘It just breaks my heart.’ Death of man fleeing immigration raid at Home Depot sparks anger, grief

Was it different before (it says "Updated Aug. 15"), or is it heavily edited in this post?

I went with the published hed at time of post. Maybe an editor at LAT is secretly on Beehaw?

I really don't have the energy to research right now, but if we've hit the point that a folo is being presented as a rewrite, we're squarely in Ministry of Truth territory, which is abhorrent.

Could be. Don't worry anyway, we've been in Ministry of Truth territory since the moment news outlets started going online. I've checked on Archive.org, and the only snapshot is from after the update, so... yes, that's the world we live in 🤷

A dramatic story that should never have happened.
