This is an excellent law. Don’t let abusers have a place to hide.

Hiding pedophiles is not freedom of religion.

The U.S. Department of Justice said it has opened an investigation into the “development and passage” of a new Washington law that requires clergy to report instances of child abuse or neglect, which the Justice Department says could violate the First Amendment’s right to free exercise of religion.

Holy shit, 1. protecting the church from mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect is pretty crazy but, 2. they’re AcTuALlY using the 1A’s ‘free exercise’ clause?! But, only in regards or because they want to protect the independence of Christianity from ‘gov’t overreach’, of course… they wouldn’t do the same for the Satanic Temple for example.
