It's smart. Draining the capital swamp ahead of time prevents dipshits from successfully running on a promise of draining the swamp (exceptions apply.)

Netherlands: amateurs

Proceeds to build a country on a swamp.

It's even more impressive, right? More like building on the sea, wasn't it?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's reclaiming the sea. Build big dykes to cut off a piece of sea from the rest. Pomp water out. You now have new land.

Yeah, that's why I'm saying they didn't build on a swamp! They made swamp

[–] [email protected] 2 points 13 hours ago

They created a giant swamp, then built on that.

Other kings said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one! That sank into the swamp. So, I built a third one! That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one stayed up!

What, the curtains?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

At that point, the swamp is more like flat ground

New Orleans is cool

But like, I can't blame them. Who doesn't like having access to water? Fixing swampland is a one-time thing.

Idk if ancient Rome was ever a swamp? It was famous for it's 7 hills. Unless you mean Ravenna then sure it's 100% swamp.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Rome was infamously swampy. Malaria was rampant for just that reason. The Field of Mars itself was pretty swampy.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Rome being built only on its seven hills is a common misconception. Moreover it has also always been in the space in between and towards the river Tiber.

True heroes build their capital below sea level.
