I always feel like the hands-free bidet is sneaking up on me, I prefer the control and manual aim/pressure of the gun.

lol I'm stealing 'bum gun'. Just installed one last week and can't believe what I've missed out on my entire life.

you're welcome to it.

I've been calling them toilet guns for years, and then someone on the internet said bum gun, and it's too good not to use.

"...can't believe what I've missed out on my entire life."

exactly how I felt when I first used a bidet.

like "why did everyone teach me to use my hand and paper for this rather than a hygienic, elegant solution?"

Sounds a bit like the Finnish nickname pillupuhelin (pussy phone)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

that's a finnish nickname for a bidet?

Bidet shower, so the bum gun

I've heard bum gun from Thai folks but I'm guessing some Australian came up with that? Sounds like something they would say. I don't even know what the Thai word is or the literal translation.

I've been there a dozen times and also have no idea what the Thai word is, so here:

"In the Thai language, a bum gun is referred to as: săai chèet cham-rá (สายฉีดชำระ), hŭa-chèet (หัวฉีด), or thêe chèet dtòot (ที่ฉีดตูด)"

hm. sounds like they don't know either.

I found this language learning site that more sounds like they know what they're talking about:

"Bum Gun ที่ฉีดก้น Têe Chèet Gôn"

Yup, upvoted for "bum gun"

Definitely hands free, and preferably heated.

The cold wakes me up faster in the morning than the caffeine that caused me to use the bidet

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i do like the heated ones, but I don't even notice if they're cold anymore.

actually if they're warm I'm like hey get off your high horse, fancy pants! and then luxuriate.

why hands-free, just so you don't have to go anywhere near there?

I just push a button and then wiggle around, so much easier. It's also more of a precise spray dot, like a pressure washer. All the handheld ones I've seen/used are more like a kitchen sink sprayer hose.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

fair point. i prefer the slightly wider spray, but i appreciate pinpoint precision as well.

I got a Tushy during COVID mostly because I was bored and figured I'd give it a try.

One of the best purchases I've ever made.

congrats, that's genuinely great to hear!

I felt the same way after my first bidet use in Thailand.

i was like what? WHAT? toilet hygiene already exists!? why are the cavemen using paper!?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

yup! When I go on vacation I miss my dogs and tushy.

i might have a little revelation for you: the backwoods bidet.

use a lighter to heat up a fork tine, press the first 2 mm of the tine under the lip of the flange under the cap to make a small 2x1mm hole, fill the bottle with water, flip upside down and squeeze.

instant bidet.

i am not joking, it has completely changed how I travel since now I can travel to any country and not be irritated by the lack of a bidet.

plastic bottle, small hole near the top, fill with water, pressure water bidet by squeezing the bottle.

revolutionary.

I actually have a $10 thing I travel with called a "Happy Po." Just a water bottle with a twist on nozzle.

https://www.amazon.com/HappyPo-Original-Portable-Bidet-Easy-Bidet/dp/B07GBSQKL5

Works OK, but not the same.

Plus for more magic marker poops, you might need to get up and refill it. Although when I was in Italy, I could refill from the tub while on the toilet.

I've never used the "bum gun" style. I think I'd prefer that. The ones that you sit over aren't necessarily "one size hits all" and I always end up having to move around on the toilet to actually get the water to hit where it needs to (including the one I actually have).

Ehhhhh, kinda difficult to pick.

I have both in my house, in different bathrooms. Hands free is nice because it's all lazy and easy, but it actually takes longer by a little bit.

The handheld is faster, and has a nice massage effect. However, there's more overspray, even with the kind I have that's focused rather than just a repurposed sink sprayer like I've run into, and tried.

So I think I err on the side of handheld overall, but I have used seat based ones that had a lot of settings that were really nice, like oscillating spray, pulses, etc. They aren't just about it being nice, they make the job quicker too, countering the flaw most of them have.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i think i err on the side of convenience as well, but i couldn't agree more with how fun a dozen settings are

I remember my first time in the tokyo airport bathroom, they have hands free bidets and i conservatively spent 15 minutes after business time experimenting with the functions.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah, the first fancy bidet I ran across, I was the same way. It was at a friend's house, and they were giving me hell about playing with it after I was in there for a good twenty minutes.

How can you not try everything out?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bum gun, hands down. I never quite figured out the deal with the hands free ones and it always felt a bit unclean

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

I also spend far longer trying to get clean with hands-free, the gun is good. the gun is great. the gun is the way.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Toto washlet. Heated water/seat, adjustable pressure, oscillates, semi aimable, etc

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

sounds like a good setup, i used those bad boys in japan nonstop.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Hands free assuming it's my own at home.
