Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

A group of penguins is called a distribution.

The collective noun for a group of linuxes is a "a musk of linuxes"

    [–] pennomi@lemmy.world 44 points 10 months ago (1 children)

These days I suspect most Linux users would like to distance themselves from the term β€œmusk”.

Must have been a blissful moment, however brief

I actually really like Penguins, but I think it was because of Fight Club and not Linux.

I always liked penguins and Tux.. But that movie cemented penguins as my spirit animal :)

I liked penguins before Linux was

I'm in this picture and I don't mind at all. Penguins are fucking cool. I'm gonna go to Argentina just to see them in the wild.

It is said that only those who make the pilgrimage to see the penguins in person will be blessed with the full power of linux

    [–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Do zoos count? Then child me might have given more power than I could have imagined.

Does anyone know how we ended up with penguins as the logo? I kinda get the BSD demon β€œbeastie.” Microsoft chose the windows flag/window pane. Mac has an Apple/the finder face. Android is a cute green robot. iOS pretends to be too sophisticated for a mascot so we’ll just say it’s the Apple again.

And yet we somehow got penguins.

Wasn't it something like Linus really likes penguins?

    [–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Based on a song parody by SUSE I believe a 'little penguin bit him at the zoo'. But don't quote me on that.

    [–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

SuSE songs are considered canon in the Linux world.

    [–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 10 months ago

There's a story. If you search you'll find it readily.

    [–] power@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago

    his name is tux!

    [–] AllOutOfBubbleGum@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Are these called "Wojack" memes? I've never understood why this art style became so popular.

    [–] power@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

soyjaks. and they embody the more grubby parts of the web

    [–] AllOutOfBubbleGum@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Ah, gotcha. Feel like I'm too old to keep up with it now.

    [–] KMAMURI@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago
