The gamers on Reddit are convinced that steam is THEIR corporation and Gabe is THEIR billionaire so they’re good guys of the people, that’s how propaganda gets people
I agree that Valve shouldn't get a free pass but at the same time, an enemy of my enemy is my friend. So long as they are developing GNU+Linux and enabling people to move away from Microsoft, they have my support.
That said, I fully understand that Valve is doing this out of self interest, their interests may change to be counter to mine.
Ugh, so true. The insidious nature of Steam is the fact that they're basically a PC gaming business monopoly, but they're benign compared to other corporations, so gamers tend to turn a blind eye to that fact, or find various grasping ways to convince themselves otherwise (there's still Epic and GOG! etc). The fact that 80%+ of PC game sales are through Steam doesn't seem to faze or disturb them, when it most definitely should. What happens when Steam drops the facade? I imagine it won't be long before Steam turns into the badguy.
There is a big difference when it's a choice to use them. You aren't forced or obligated, but people choose to. And they choose them for a reason, they do pretty good these days. People used to hate steam cause it was kinda shit when they first came out. I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement, pretty much everything does. But it could be worse.
I do fully agree, when Gaben steps down/passes I fully expect it to turn to typical gaming company fuckery.

People have been predicting Steam will do a heel turn for more than a decade. But, their consumer-friendly policies and ease of use have kept them the dominant platform despite immense spending from other companies.
They're still a store, and I don't think anybody's confusing them with a charity. But, a nearly 20 year track record suggests that they know that being trustworthy and consumer-friendly is essential to their long-term financial success.

Steam is a market leader, not a monopoly. Steam looks like a monopoly because it is the natural effect of being a market leader.

Reasonable disturbance but I personally will only categorize this as a concern.
Looking at it like a team sport is pretty silly, yeah, but I’m still willing to use Steam just the same. No billionaire or successful corporation is “my” people, but doing business with the ones that are decent to their customers seems fine.
Gaming generally involves paying money for proprietary software anyway, so that’s not a realm where the existence of any DRM is a showstopper for me personally. Any per-game DRM with heinous kernel-level shit such that it won’t run on Linux at all, that stuff is fine to just not exist in my world.

I think it is unfortunately all cops. I'm not even ACAB.
A police officer may be a good person, and a police officer may be a good police officer, and no matter the case, a police officer may do good things, if we are lucky. The role grants privileges, explicitly or otherwise, which can easily be abused. Cops are an instrument of the government, primarily concerned with law enforcement and working closely with prosecutors to find citizens guilty. They are not required to enforce laws, or provide public safety, so this allows for selective application of these responsibilities.
They are not inherently good or bad, more a necessary evil, and they should never be trusted. Interact with them as little as possible, watch them closely when you see them interacting with the public. In some cases they're good people doing good work, great. Not all the time, sometimes it depends on the person, the circumstances, or both.
That can be said about almost anyone. There are good, and bad bus drivers where I am. They work for the public, I can apply your same logic to them.
