Or that guy wants to be the best possible guardian for the innocent life he's about to adopt so he chooses to behave as though the dog has the same capacity for emotion as he does. In that case, first impressions are important.
There's nothing even remotely negative about this, even if it was tongue in cheek to get a laugh and a swoon out of his girl.
