I made this in 2022 in QGIS (but when I uploaded it on Reddit back then, you may find it as starting at Ste-Helena island.... don't ask me why, I don't remember how I made that mistake when posting it)

How the European countries are reached? Is it by considering the colonies?

Yes, mostly some small islands somewhere in the Atlantic.

A neat thing I read a while ago was that it is possible to travel in a straight line over the ocean from the east coast of Canada (Halifax I think) and make it to the west coast of Canada.

My friend drove back to Halifax from Vancouver at the beginning of covid. I would love to sail this route to see him again.

I don't remember where I first read this factoid (if it is a factoid) but there are several articles mentioning that there are straight line ocean routes that are even longer than the distance from Nova Scotia to British Columbia ... here is on illustration

This would be so cool as an interactive web app

QGIS is cool software to learn, I should do it just to fuck around tbh...

New Zealand is highlighted but I don't see any lines to it

It counts overseas territories/islands. It hits Raoul Island in the case of New Zealand.

Since it doesn’t actually specify “without traveling over land”, you could get to all coastlines, everywhere 😁
