Summers here can get a get a bit hot too -- we had a few weeks last year where the temps barely dipped under 25c at all, even at night.

That, coupled with an apartment in a brick building facing the sun, made to hold as much heat as possible, means next to no sleep :<

Fans need to become a thing in Norway. I get weirded out by the utter lack of air circulation.

Norwegians don't have fans?

77F is just a bit warm for me, but if that's the highest I could expect? I'd still take it.

At least you get like 22 1/2 hours of sunlight a day then though!

this sounds great until you realize it means it literally doesn't get dark, for a month straight it is always bright enough that they don't really even need to turn on the street lamps.

It sucks more than you think it would to not be able to see the night sky properly during the warmest months, all the astronomy up here has to be done when it's cold 😭

I visited Norway once, in the early '80s. I was a kid, riding in the back of the family station wagon. It was raining like hell. Hard rain, like I've only seen on tropical islands, and one time in Mississippi. Then it very quickly stopped. The sun came out. Cars started pulling over on the side of the freeway. We kept driving along. People got out of cars, pulled out fold out chairs, many took off tops, or just rolled up sleeves, and sat by the side of the road, enjoying the bright sun. I don't know if this is/was a rare occurrence, but it's one of my stronger memories from our visit.

Must have been Bergen, they only get about 15 minutes of sunshine a year

You're pretty out of date. With climate change, it's about 30 minutes now

Is… is it cold all the time?

Hits about 25C on a good summer day in Oslo. Problem is it doesn't last too long!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 22 hours ago

25C is pretty good! But we can go higher and neither we nor our houses are built for heat, so it gets to be like a thousand degrees indoors at night and we can't sleep and get dehydrated and desalinated.

I'm considering whether I'll have to start fleeing to the Northwestern coast to chill with some drizzle instead of getting heat stroke

Pretty much all of June July and August was in the 20s in Tromsø last summer. I grew tomatoes and chillis on the balcony. I'd say that qualifies as pretty warm.

Well that’s a little spicy but not bad. How is Norway on trans people….? Asking for a friend… the… the friend is me. I’m the friend.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 21 hours ago

You can legally change your gender, and there is not that much prejudice, so I'd say pretty good.

So Norway is interesting in regards to the LGBTQ community. Sexuality things are generally very accepted all over Norway and have been for longer than most places. Gender things are a bit different, but progressing slowly in the right direction, I think.

For example doctors are not allowed to prescribe HRT unless they can show that their patient has been living as the gender they identify with for a year (I have heard this, don't know if it's accurate). One article i read also said that in order to be officially change your sex (new I'd number, passport etc), removal of the testicles/ovaries is required. So not exactly progressive. But I think that a lot of the official stuff might just be that Norway is extremely slow to change things. There's very much an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude here and that means that most things are very close to broken most of the time.

Individual views tend to be relatively open minded in most circles, but you do get a lot of closed minded people who can be quite forthcoming with their opinion after a few beers. Although that being said the majority of Norwegians don't like to involve themselves in other people's business beyond a snide comment between friends. I would be genuinely shocked if a trans person were physically assaulted. According to statistics from the police, there are between 5 and 15 counts of bodily harm (including grievous bodily harm) and fewer than 5 counts of bodily injury (not sure why the distinction) motivated by gender identity each year and 2 murders in 2022 although the statistics I saw only covered 2021-2023. I have no idea how they collected or handled the data.

Regarding pronouns, my NB friend has said that they constantly need to remind people. Also an NB colleague of mine who's they/them pronouns are visible in their zoom profile is habitually referred to as she by all but a couple of my colleagues (2/50) and even when I emphasise they there are only a couple more who switch.

I know that recently the orange administration has been sending ultimatums to all the universities in Europe saying essentially saying "stop teaching woke stuff and practicing dei or we won't recognise your university or fund American students who go there". I believe the response has been a mixture of offence and disgust. One of the department heads signed it and was quickly reprimanded by the administration and told to walk it back. So there's that at least.

That's my knowledge of the situation in Norway, it I'm not trans so take what I say with a pinch of salt. Hope it was helpful.

This is… insane. Thank you so so much for the long though out response. I’m currently in the US (rest in piece) and considering if I need to gtfo.

Considering options, honestly, I like being colder and sounds like Norway wouldn’t be too far from what would be good for me. Plus, they are having politicians suggest asylum for trans people, I think.

I also bring skills, pretty ok programmer, mechanic, speaks… well English. :/

A mechanic? Can you fix my POS 2013 VW Touran?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 hours ago
