General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both [email protected] and [email protected] .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

[email protected] appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

Interesting how there's no explanation of WHY digital would be better than analogue, how it would tackle illegal employment or stop cash payments etc. I think they just want to be able to outsource another chunk of the state to a giant foreign conglomerate

Its always a brand new system with a massive scope as well so that it costs an arm and two legs, and is so over complicated it never gets finished.

Meanwhile we already have a universal voluntary ID system that half of all adults already own and the department that is responsible for it, does it on a small profit.

If its just about ID then get the DVLA to start issuing non driving licenses in a different colour and speed up their digital role out.

It's funny how they go from criticising China to trying to replicate China. The only difference is, we're not as honest about it.

Literally true. Also with internet censorship as well.

And the desire for a backdoor into every single encrypted transmission on the internet. Just for the good guys though, and only so they can check you're not a paedo, so that's alright.

I don't think even the chinese go that far. Although they do generally ban encrypted messaging apps when they get too big. Signal wasn't banned until recently tho iirc

Labour should quit pandering to racists and xenophobes. It's a race to the bottom and Reform will always be even more brutal and repressive. Labour should be decisively opposing this imbecility, not joining the lynch mob.

I'd welcome digital IDs, not on the immigration front, but on the convenience of a) having ID accessible without a wallet, and b) not needing to use a passport or driving licence for ID when some people can't get a driving licence and don't want to have to carry the passport for buying alcohol for example
