We’re heading for a caps-lock DEPRESSION that’ll probably be worse than the 1930s, because the world is likely going to move away from the USD standard as a result of this, all of the trade alliances we’ve built for over a goddamn CENTURY are being shattered as we speak, and we have a whole hell of a lot further to fall than we did compared to the 1920s and 30s in terms of standard of living. I would not be surprised if this ends in the balkanization of the US. For fucks sake, countries are starting to reconsider buying shit from our military industrial complex - say what you will about the corruption and waste, but we do make a lot of the best military hardware in the world right now. And that has implications for our own military as well, because the economy of scale is probably going to completely evaporate sooner or later.

We already can't economically build ships for the navy because we've so dramatically hollowed out our steel refining and commercial ship-building industries. We're looking at a future where the US military is primarily a client of the international arms industry for everything but guns.

I was born in 1970, and some of the adults around when I was a kid still lived like at any day the rug could be pulled out from under them.

Yep my step grandmother grew up in the depression and she would buy a enough groceries to feed an army every week. Even though it was only here in the house. She had boxes of cereal from freaking 80's on the shelf and deep freezers and I mean 2 to 3 full of meat. You didn't her cooking it was so bad meat gone freezer rot. But she couldn't help it. She was child during the depression she talk about it often and how bad it was.

My grandmother also live through the depression. She would save half a cracker with some cheese on it for the next day. I don't think I saw her waste a morsel of food in 30 years.

From 32 to 52 a Democrat was president, the Republicans lost the House and Senate pretty much constantly for 60 years, sounds to me like people remember, you just want to argue for the sake of arguing.

We need to realize that the scale might be different, but disinformation and propaganda in mass media was very much a thing a hundred years ago!

I think it's less access to information, it's more about being bombarded with information that you can't remember everything, and you can easily forget things you already know or confuse that memory with another misinformation that was repeated many times.

Again, recent examples have shown that people easily forgot how bad Trump's first term was, and it has nothing to do with not having access to said information.

People were voting against Dems for inflation that was largely from summer of 2022. Bear markets/recessions usually last 15 months.

I think at this point we're will have recession, even if trump reverts those tariffs.

You forgot the part where foreign governments, corporations, and consumers actively divert trillions of dollars of revenue and investments away from the US.

Removing the tariffs won't remove the distrust or risk, and if the US is somehow able to have legitimate elections again, removing Trump won't either. The world now considers a significant portion of the American populace mentally-ill. It would take generations to fix that damage, if ever.
