As someone who always plays on shitty unmaintained rec center courts I'd give anything for some development of a good cheap court material other than wood.

Oh yeah, history is rife with attempts to change flooring on sports that didn't pan out, like Carpet Court or Blue Clay in tennis. For basketball, I walked on a Nike Grind court (Well, not 100% if was Nike Grind per se, but they said it was made out of recycled shoes so...) that they have at their Beaverton campus and the cushioning felt fairly noticeable.

how about you focus on asking fans if we actually want to watch this bullshit. could save you a lot of time and money.
