Movies owned by the Disney company generate a lot of merchandise: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars. But technology is leading to a decrease in the sale of physical toys. What better way to get kids interested in toys again than a movie about how the toys are sad kids are neglecting them in favour of technology.

Some of you might think my theory is correct but I'm not serious about it because I'm not that cynical about movies. I think Pixar loves its Toy Story films and genuinely wanted to tell a story about what happens to toys when kids become distracted by technology.

Also, from the perspective of trying to make money, I'm sure Disney is also making money off apps, games, and streaming. They don't care if the money comes from physical toys or digital toys. They're probably selling tablets in the likeness of the film's villain. Convincing kids to go back to physical toys will gain them money in one area but lose money in another area

Which just proves my point further, since this was part of arguing for why my joke is wrong and they wouldn't want people to go back to physical
