Same I used to wear a red hat with my favorite comic character on it. I had to switch to a black version due to repelling the groups I wanted to be around and attracting the groups I didn't want to be in the same room with. I could tell a noticeable difference after I switched. They see red hat and feel uneasy even when its not the correct hat.
I've caught myself thinking like this too. It's honestly pretty hard not to see any red hat as a possible sign of a fascist.
