1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

New phone time (lemmynsfw.com)
submitted 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) by Worx@lemmynsfw.com to c/dull_mens_club@lemmy.world

Just bought a new phone after almost eight years with my current phone. The battery is knackered and the charging port died for the third time. This phone has been great, thank you buddy.

My new phone came in a 31*31*16cm package. It's over 29,000x the volume of the phone it's transporting. Seems incredibly wasteful to me. But despite all of that empty space, there's no charger! Wtf?! Is this a thing now, that you don't get a charger? Or am I just being ripped off?

I went straight to Motorola because my current phone from them is so good, now I'm feeling a bit scammed honestly

EDIT: It seems like I'm getting old, apparently you just don't get a charger any more. It's pretty standard. Helps cut down on packaging apparently(!) I guess I approve in principle, but when you ship it in a massive box anyway and I'll need to buy a new charger to get the best out of the new phone anyway, it just means I have to spend even more than I budgeted for and have a second package delivered to me at even more cost and environmental impact. Yay I guess.

Got a Pixel 10 Pro XL recently. No charger, just the cable.

People obviously don't need new chargers anymore. 🙄

There are so many USB power sockets already available. This is good for less waste. Also it encourages phone makers to actually adopt a common fast charge system, since proprietary brand chargers are less common.

If you're having an 8 year old phone it might not be so fun, since micro USB was still widely used. On the other hand, all you need is a cable, if you don't care about fast charging.

The last MicroUSB phone I had must've been close to 15 years ago by now.. I don't think they were common for phones in 2018

Time passes quickly. I remember having a oneplus 3. One of the earlier models to adopt USB C. This was apparently in 2016 (10 years ago). The regulation from the EU was voted in favor in 2022 (the Radio Equipment Directive). Most android phones had already adopted us C by then, save for budget models. So it's very much possible OP had a micro USB phone before this. Or an iPhone.

OP's 8 year old phone was the Motorola G7 Power, a phone that came out a little less than 7 years ago (interesting) and did have USB-C

Even easier then. No new charger or cable needed for OP.
