The US isn't the way it is because of Trump, but Trump is the way he is because of the US.

Bit of column A, bit of column B.

Trump is not a uniquely American invention and he's not the first bumbling dictator to gain power through populist bigotry.

However, there is a significant feedback loop with America outright rewarding craven Nazis, handing them "success" and then allowing them to continue perpetuating and emboldening people just like them.
