It seems that not unlike how the extra characters in Lewis Carroll's Alice books are mad by obligation, every extra character in the Moominverse is similarly a weirdo, by obligation.

Kinda reminds me of Philip K. Dick's Clans of the Alphane Moon, in which everyone in the colony has a discrete mental illness.
