The threshold household income where a family can afford housing, healthcare, childcare, and transportation without relying on means-tested benefits is a lot higher than the official stats suggest.

The math has been shown. Times published an article a few years back that showed the 1% have siphoned $50 trillion for themselves over decades since 1970 that are essentially due to stagnant wages. Put differently, the 1% owes the rest of America $50 trillion. Probably a few trillion more now.
