My first knit! I made a simple scarf for my little brother (lemmy.world)

It was surprisingly easy to do the stripe, I was expecting everything to fall apart! The real challenge was keeping the end from unraveling when I was done, but I managed... barely.

Welcome to knitting, the hobby where you too can find out how difficult counting can be.
Two things I noticed:

  • The scarf curls inward, likely due to you using stockinette stitch. Meaning all knit stitches throughout, when viewed from the "front." You can prevent this by alternating knits and purls column-wise. Keep in mind that a knit stitch on the "right" side will be a purl on the other. Hence the name purl-side.
  • If I'm not mistaken all your stitches are twisted. This happens when knitting a stitch through the back of the loop and results in the yarn crossing over itself rather than looping. Unless this is intentional, of course.

In all seriousness thank you so much for the advice! I'll definitely research what each of those stitches are before my next attempt, it will be nice not having the whole thing roll up on me.

Also no it wasn't intentional, I literally bought a loom kit and googled how to knit a scarf and just did the first thing I saw haha. We all have to start somewhere!

Yes, the jargon is one of the first hurdles.

Absolutely! The first hat I knit I tore up twice because I made mistakes. Counting to 3 is hard. And in the end I couldn't wear it because I chose a cast-on that couldn't stretch enough and it wouldn't fit over my head.

If you're interested, I can recommend Maggy Rigetti's book "Knitting in plain English"
Great book for beginners and seasoned knitters alike.
