Sorry, but I disagree. The second Piastri locked up, the corner was Kimi’s, and he knew it. Given where the cars were, Kimi was going to make contact with someone, there was no avoiding it. After watching it, I was thinking it highlighted a difference between Piastri and Verstappen. How many times have we seen Max bomb down on the inside and “muscle his way through” going wide on the exit, but pushing the guy he’s passing further and completing the pass? Because he doesn’t lock up the tires, the stewards don’t have an easy decision like they did with Piastri today.
What was Piastri supposed to do? He's alongside Kimi and there is no way to give him more space.
Yeah, the stewards say he's not alongside enough and therefore solely responsible. He should've done it like Max often does and divebomb the car on the outside to be a bit closer at the apex. Would also reduce locking up. Great. What a pointless penalty.
To add to this because people are pointing at the lockup as the reason Piastri is to blame.. I couldn't find a good angle but it looked to me like Piastri was locking up because he could see Antonelli turning into him and he tried to slow down even more to give space to Antonelli.
But yeah, it seems like the stewarding is sending a message that Verstappen-esque "get to the apex first" is the way to go because a half-measure gets you the penalty.
Yes, I agree. It's in response to Kimi rapidly closing the door. He also didn't lose control, however, which could be a reasonable argument for a penalty. A frustrating decision.
You say it yourself. Either do it like Verstappen, or dont do it at all. With the current rule set that is the logical outcome.
Stella didnt even protest against the penalty.
The problem is that this ruleset inhibits wheel to wheel action. Either divebomb or don't overtake on the inside. I don't want racing where the only overtakes happen on the straights with DRS.
In my opinion Piastris move was valid and should be allowed. Kimi should give him space, there is plenty as shown in the picture.
It's the stewards discretion to decide when to apply which rules. They are normally more lenient after a (re-)start. Protesting is pointless as they acted within the ruleset. I just think it's stupid.
You know this picture is the first time I’ve seen that George also locked up! Didn’t even notice it in all the replays!
Please don’t reference stewarding on Verstappen’s moves as the standard, as they are controversial enough… it was a racing incident caused by Piastri taking advantage of the inside gap and being closed by Antonelli, who had a lot of room to his right. The context of safety car restart should have been taken into account imo as they always close their eyes during “turn 1 free ticket to mow” at race starts.
