I saw this while waiting on a bench a few weeks ago. no idea what's up with the tree trunk

That's most likely made by whoever is taking care of the tree. They sometimes rot cause of some disease so the rotten part is taken out. I've seen some that were so large and had such big pieces missing that they looked as if they were two trees that fused together. Pretty cool.
