there is indeed a theory that D stands for Davy, and their are plenty things relating to it (tony tony chopper, all devil fruits having the repitition scheme, and there is one more related to a latest sbs answer (i will be posting soon about it))

The issue with that theory is it's cratered in popularity once it was revealed it was Davy D. Jones because then his name would be Davy Davy Jones which is just silly.
