My rrat hedge is the D stands for Davy except for the Davy clan for whom it stands for something like Devil or something similar and the others are carrying the will of Davy D. Jones.

there is indeed a theory that D stands for Davy, and their are plenty things relating to it (tony tony chopper, all devil fruits having the repitition scheme, and there is one more related to a latest sbs answer (i will be posting soon about it))

The issue with that theory is it's cratered in popularity once it was revealed it was Davy D. Jones because then his name would be Davy Davy Jones which is just silly.
